Lead Park Ranger Duties: Responsible for the Park Ranger program's creation, development, research, and implementation. Regularly evaluates program and develops, implements, and adjusts management practices to ensure effective and efficient operation. Implements programs and initiatives to promote cleanliness, safety, and security in parks and recreation facilities. Performs surveys and evaluations to ensure satisfaction, quality, and performance. Communicates and engages with other departments and agencies. Resolves community concerns and complaints. Maintains program information and records. Creates reports to share successes, challenges, and recommendations. Serves as a Park Ranger, patrolling parks, open spaces, and recreation facilities in a City vehicle, on foot, and possibly on a bike, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and security. Educates, encourages compliance, and enforces park rules and ordinances. May issue citations, as directed by local law enforcement and appears in court when necessary. Provides leadership and guidance to other operations staff and contractors after-hours. Engages with patrons, ensuring their satisfaction and delivery of high-quality facilities and service. Responds to, addresses, and mitigates conflict among park users. Uses discretion when evaluating a situation, knowing the level of urgency that requires police support. Performs enforcement duties as specified in policies and procedures, to include the issuance of warnings and violation notices. Serves as a good witness for the Police Department regarding serious/criminal matters. Creates daily reports documenting occurrences and reporting urgent issues promptly. Leads, guides, and supervises staff, volunteers, and contractors. Motivates, inspires, and mentors team members to reach their greatest potential. Assists with hiring, training, and evaluating team members. Teaches and trains on park safety and security practices. Is open and approachable, supports team members, and promotes two-way communication and fee Coordinates with the Cortez Police Department, Parks and Recreation Department, and other city departments accordingly. May also coordinate with sports user groups, shelter reservations, after-hour park maintenance, the recreation center, the library, park events staff, and volunteer projects. Utilizes the dispatch radio system in an appropriate and effective manner, keeping dispatch informed of Park Ranger scheduling and availability. Promotes land stewardship and enhances the public's experience of parks, recreation facilities, and spaces through volunteerism and field engagement. Takes a community-minded approach to problem-solving and addressing maintenance issues in parks, recreation areas, and facilities. Builds relationships with community members, identifies opportunities for volunteerism, recruits, manages, and recognizes volunteers, enhancing community engagement in parks and recreation spaces. Work is primarily performed outdoors and may require extensive walking, biking, or driving under adverse conditions for extended periods. Ability to work under stress, communicate effectively, and act decisively in stressful situations. Requirements: Ability to think and act quickly with discretion. Knowledge of security and enforcement; understands police work and can distinguish between situations that require a police presence and non-emergency situations that a Park Ranger can resolve. Knowledge of park rules and ordinances pertinent to city, state, and federal laws. Knowledge of principles and practices for security and incident report preparation. Ability to encourage compliance with Parks and Recreation rules and policies equitably and positively. Knowledge of, and the ability to implement and develop standards required for Park Ranger programming, including program creation, development, implementation, and ongoing management and coordination. Ability to train, direct, and supervise other staff members. At least one year of e perience in enforcement or security, demonstrating the ability to investigate and enforce ordinances, rules, and regulations. Three years of experience is preferred. Experience in a leadership role is highly desirable. Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. Must possess a valid drivers license.
