Lathe CNC Setup Operator

Role Overview:
The CNC Lathe Setup Operator is responsible for setting up CNC machines to ensure efficient production, high-quality output, and safe operations. The primary focus of this role is to achieve an acceptable first piece inspection by properly preparing machines, tooling, and programs.
This is a hands-on, technical role requiring strong experience with CNC lathe setups, tooling, and troubleshooting, with the ability to work with minimal supervision in a machine shop environment.
Job Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience setting up CNC machines (required).
- Strong experience with turning lathes (CNC Lathe experience required).
- Hands-on experience using measurement tools, including calipers, comparators, depth micrometers, and surface finish testers.
- Experience with Haas, Mori Seiki, and/or Star CNC machines is a plus.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Basic English communication skills.
- Basic math skills, including measuring and use of calculators.
- Familiarity with engineering drawings and machining specifications.
- Experience working in a machine shop environment.
- Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions.
- Must have or be willing to obtain a Vernier caliper and eye loupe (personal tools may be approved or purchased through the company).
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs, with occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Regular standing and use of hands for handling tools and machine controls.
- Frequent reaching, with occasional walking during the shift.
- Visual requirements include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Work Environment:
- Work performed around moving mechanical parts and vibration.
- Exposure to machine shop conditions, including oil, metal chips, and cleaning solutions.
- Floors may be slippery due to oil or other materials.
- Moderate noise level typical of a manufacturing facility.
- Work performed in areas where forklifts are in operation.
- Handling of bar stock materials from storage racks.

Key Responsibilities:
- Set Up CNC Machines: Prepare CNC machines for production by installing tooling, loading programs, and ensuring readiness for operation.
- Edit & Load Programs: Create, edit, upload, and download CNC programs as required for each job.
- Prepare Tooling & Gages: Lay out and organize all tooling and measurement instruments prior to setup.
- Install & Adjust Tooling: Install tools into turret positions, perform tool touch-offs, and update program offsets.
- Troubleshoot Equipment: Identify and resolve CNC machine issues to maintain production efficiency.
- Support CNC Operators: Provide guidance and assistance to machine operators during production.
- Inspect Parts: Perform inspections using comparators, calipers, gauges, eye loupe, and other instruments to ensure quality.
- Perform Visual Quality Checks: Inspect for burrs, chatter, surface finish, chamfer issues, and dimensional accuracy.
- Verify First Piece: Confirm that parts meet specifications using engineering drawings and first-article samples.
- Adjust Machines: Change tools, adjust offsets, and make machine corrections as needed.
- Maintain Quality & Safety Standards: Follow all company safety, environmental, and quality procedures.
- Communicate Issues: Report problems and recommend process improvements or solutions.
- Work Independently: Perform duties with minimal supervision.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
