Shift / Hours:
1st Shift — 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM
Monday–Friday | 40 hours/week

Role Overview
The Laboratory Animal Technician supports biomedical research by providing daily animal husbandry care and maintaining animal housing facilities in accordance with established procedures, state and federal regulations, and AAALAC guidelines. This role is essential to ensuring animal health, environmental compliance, and accurate documentation within a regulated research environment.
The technician reports to the Supervisor of the Animal Research Facility and works collaboratively to maintain high standards of animal welfare and facility operations.

Key Responsibilities
Animal Care & Monitoring
  • Provide daily husbandry care to research animals following approved schedules and procedures
  • Monitor animal health and well-being; report signs of illness immediately to the Supervisor
  • Complete all required reports, cage notification cards, and documentation accurately
  • House newly arriving animal colonies per standard operating procedures
  • Verify incoming animal orders against logs and cage cards and report discrepancies
Facility & Environmental Maintenance
  • Monitor and record room temperature and humidity; report deviations immediately
  • Clean and sanitize holding rooms, procedure spaces, and storage areas per SOPs
  • Remove waste and document all room maintenance activities
  • Monitor cages for proper identification and occupancy compliance
Equipment & Operations
  • Operate biosafety cabinets, animal transfer stations, chemical foamers, hydraulic lifts, and ventilated racks
  • Assist with preparing autoclaved caging materials for immune-compromised colonies
  • Record sterilization pass/fail indicators and report failures promptly
  • Support cage wash operations, including bedding disposal units, vacuum systems, washers, and bulk autoclaves
  • Clean and sanitize large animal pens (pigs, dogs, sheep) and rabbit housing units
  • House newly arriving large animals and provide feed and bedding as required
Documentation & Compliance
  • Scan bar-coded cage cards to provide census data as requested
  • Ensure adherence to department policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
  • Report all deficiencies, errors, and non-conformances immediately

Required Skills & Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma / GED required
Experience
  • Previous laboratory animal care or research facility experience preferred
  • Must have been separated from BILH for 6+ months to be considered
Required Skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written procedures
  • Ability to work reliably in a regulated research environment
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain accurate logs and documentation
  • Dependable attendance and schedule adherence

  • Standing, walking, bending, lifting, and repetitive motion throughout the shift
  • Ability to lift and move materials as required
  • Exposure to animals, cleaning agents, and laboratory environments
  • Use of specialized equipment and controlled research spaces
