The Junior Accountant supports the day-to-day financial operations of a heavy civil construction company by assisting with core accounting functions such as job cost tracking, bank reconciliations, general ledger support, and financial reporting. This role works closely with the Accounting Manager and Accounting team to help ensure accurate financial records, proper documentation, and compliance with company policies and labor agreements.

This position is ideal for an early-career accounting professional seeking to develop hands-on experience in construction and project-based accounting, while gaining exposure to job costing, union reporting, and financial reporting processes.

Key Responsibilities:

Banking & General Ledger

  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for company bank accounts.
  • Prepare and post journal entries including accruals, reclassifications, and adjustments.
  • Create and maintain monthly GL workbooks reconciling key GL accounts
  • Review/Approve AP check runs
  • Manage intercompany reconciliation
  • Help create a monthly close process

Cash & Receipts

  • Record customer payments and assist with reconciling cash receipts.
  • Apply payments to the appropriate customer accounts and projects in the accounting system.
  • Assist with monitoring deposits and investigating discrepancies in payment allocations.
  • Approve ACH and Positive pay exception
  • Help with union benefit payments

Job Cost & Project Accounting

  • Assist in maintaining accurate job cost records within the accounting system.
  • Support project managers and accounting staff with expense coding and project cost tracking.
  • Help review labor and overhead allocations for accuracy.

Asset Management

  • Maintain the fixed asset register, including tracking asset purchases and disposals.
    • Reconciling the asset register to the GL accounts
  • Support depreciation schedules and year-end asset reconciliations.

Reporting

  • Assist with preparing recurring and ad-hoc financial and operational reports, including:
    • Job status and historical experience reports
    • Backlog reporting
    • Prepare a Cash position and LOC Memo
    • Monthly financial statement support schedules
    • Asset and depreciation reports
  • Provide support to the Accounting Manager for internal reviews, audits, and financial analysis.

Audit & Compliance

  • Assist in preparing documentation for internal and external audits.
    • Internal audit for 4/30 interim financials and 10/31-year-end financials
    • Various union audits
    • NJM worker's compensation audit
  • Maintain organized financial records in accordance with company retention policies.
  • Prepare various quarterly tax returns

  • Provide support with payroll tax filings and other regulatory reporting as needed.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
  • 2–4 years of accounting experience or relevant internship experience preferred.
  • Exposure to accounting software or ERP systems preferred (Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300 CRE, or similar).
  • Interest in construction accounting, job costing, and project-based financial management.

Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and general office software.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Basic understanding of accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with accounting staff and project teams.
