Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (with anticipated overtime as needed)
Start Date: No later than May 1

Position Overview

The organization is seeking an experienced Interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to provide senior financial leadership during a period of transition. This role requires a hands-on finance executive with strong nonprofit experience who can immediately step in, maintain stability, and partner with executive leadership, the board, and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate brings a strong executive presence, deep grants expertise, and the ability to lead through systems and organizational change with a collaborative, positive mindset.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior financial leader, providing strategic and operational oversight for all finance functions
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, cash flow management, and adherence to all deadlines
  • Oversee city, state, and federal grants, including compliance and reporting for major public funders
  • Maintain and manage financial activity within the PassPort system (required)
  • Partner with auditors and support audit-related activities and corrective actions
  • Lead preparation and presentation of financial reports and board packets (distributed 1–2 weeks prior to meetings)
  • Present financial updates:
    • Quarterly to the Board of Directors
    • Monthly to the Finance Committee
  • Support benefits-related financial oversight, including pensions and 401(k) plans
  • Guide the organization through an active financial systems transition (Great Plains to Blackbaud)
  • Collaborate closely with executive leadership and consultants on financial decision-making and restructuring initiatives
  • Lead, engage, and support the finance team, fostering collaboration and clear communication

Minimum Qualifications (Must-Haves)

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a CFO (executive-level experience required; Controller-only backgrounds will not be considered)
  • Significant nonprofit financial leadership experience
  • Strong grants management experience, including government funding
  • Hands-on experience with PassPort or equivalent government funding systems
  • Prior experience working directly with boards and finance committees
  • Proven ability to step into transitional environments and “hit the ground running”
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Ability to make thoughtful recommendations while aligning with organizational decisions

Preferred Qualifications (Pluses)

  • Experience leading or supporting a financial system implementation or migration
  • Comfort navigating organizations with frequent leadership transitions
  • Background working with complex funding structures and large public funders

Leadership & Culture Fit

  • Engaging, collaborative leader who actively partners with teams
  • Visible and approachable executive presence
  • Patient, positive, and steady during periods of transition
  • Not a “head-down only” operator — values relationship-building and communication

Finance Department Structure

  • Chief Financial Officer
  • VP of Budgeting & Financial Analysis
  • Controller
  • AVP of Grants & Contracts
    (Each role has direct reports)
