I&C Design Engineer

Position Overview

System One is seeking an experienced Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Design Engineer to support advanced nuclear reactor technology projects. In this role, the engineer will support system design, prototype development and testing, plant-level system integration, and commissioning activities for advanced nuclear technologies.

The engineer will work closely with multidisciplinary teams of engineers and scientists to design, specify, and integrate advanced instrumentation and control systems for next-generation nuclear reactor technologies. Depending on experience level, the candidate may also lead I&C system design activities and provide technical oversight to suppliers and engineering partners.

Key Responsibilities

System Design & Engineering

  • Interface with geographically diverse and international design teams to develop supporting engineering documentation.

  • Develop and review system and component-level specifications and scopes of work.

  • Perform engineering and design evaluations applying nuclear codes, standards, licensing requirements, and NRC regulations.

  • Analyze and specify instrumentation measurement techniques for advanced nuclear and integrated energy storage systems.

  • Evaluate measurement performance including range, response time, and accuracy.

Technical Documentation & Design Deliverables

  • Develop and review engineering documentation including:

    • System Requirements Documents (SRDs)

    • System Design Descriptions (SDDs)

    • Interface Control Documents (ICDs)

    • Engineering Design Specifications

  • Develop drawing packages and system documentation including:

    • Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)

    • Control system architecture diagrams

    • Control logic and loop diagrams

    • Instrument installation drawings

  • Generate integrated design packages for key systems and components.

Supplier & Project Support

  • Provide technical oversight and direction to I&C suppliers and subcontractors.

  • Coordinate deliverables and technical reviews with contract administration teams.

  • Support system integration activities and cross-disciplinary engineering coordination.

Cross-Discipline Integration

  • Integrate I&C design work with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering teams.

  • Support licensing activities associated with Safety Analysis Reports.

  • Assist with planning and design activities for established systems and components.

  • Evaluate and manage engineering design changes and impacts to interfacing systems.

Engineering Leadership

  • Lead design of I&C and supporting electrical systems from functional requirements through final design.

  • Provide technical guidance to engineers regarding nuclear design standards and best practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related technical discipline from an accredited university.

  • 10+ years of instrumentation and controls engineering experience.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and delivering industrial I&C systems and platforms.

  • Experience developing instrumentation diagnostics and data acquisition systems.

  • Experience applying nuclear codes, standards, and regulatory criteria to engineering design.

  • Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with nuclear reactor instrumentation or safety systems design.

  • Familiarity with IEEE and IEC standards.

  • Experience implementing nuclear quality assurance programs such as:

    • 10 CFR 50 Appendix B

    • ASME NQA-1

  • Experience designing high-temperature process systems (400°C or higher).

  • Experience working with Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).

  • Experience using CAD software such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or SolidWorks.

  • Experience with I&C startup testing procedures.
