Schedule / Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (PST)
Job Overview
The client is seeking a Contract Instructional Designer to design and develop instructor-led and on-the-job training programs supporting apprenticeship initiatives within the Power Generation utility industry. This role requires strong technical writing, instructional design expertise, and the ability to collaborate closely with subject matter experts in a regulated, safety-focused environment.
The ideal candidate demonstrates professionalism, brings concrete examples of prior instructional design successes, and is a positive, collaborative team player.
Key Responsibilities
- Training Design & Development: Design and develop instructor-led and on-the-job training for apprenticeship programs in the power generation utility industry.
- Instructional Materials: Create hands-on activities, student guides, facilitator guides, scenarios, videos, assessments, simulations, and other instructional media.
- Task Analysis: Perform detailed task analyses for job functions, business processes, and systems.
- Learning Objectives: Define learning objectives and course structures aligned with stakeholder needs and learning environment constraints.
- Standards & Governance: Apply company instructional standards, guidelines, and templates under the direction of the Senior Instructional Designer.
- Milestone Participation: Participate in task analysis, alpha, beta, train-the-trainer, pilot sessions, and milestone meetings.
- SME Collaboration: Engage with subject matter experts for content development, review, and validation.
- Communication & Delivery: Proactively communicate risks, issues, and progress while managing assigned tasks and deadlines.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience developing instructor-led training for technical skills (e.g., electrical utilities or related industries).
- Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of instructional design methodologies and technical writing.
- Proficiency with PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Teams.
- Ability to self-manage work, meet deadlines, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with hydroelectric operations, mechanical engineering, or machining.
- Master’s degree in Instructional Design or Education.
- Experience with QuestionMark, Author-It, and/or Articulate 360.
- Graphic design skills.
- Teaching experience.
- Prior Academy experience.
Travel & Work Conditions
- Primarily work from home.
- Quarterly travel required, including travel to the Sierra region.
- Occasional overnight stays may be required for milestone meetings or collaboration.
- Mileage, meals, and lodging will be reimbursed for approved onsite meetings outside headquarters.
- PPE required for some onsite visits; PPE must be purchased by the candidate, expensed for reimbursement, and returned upon off-boarding.
