Instruction And Classroom Support Technician 3: Horticulture

DESCRIPTION:   

This is a senior-level instructional support position responsible for coordinating and delivering instructional, technical, and operational support for greenhouse, laboratory, and field-based horticulture courses. Under general direction, the position designs, develops, and implements instructional support programs and facilities that emphasize complex design, applied learning, and experiential education. The role supports courses that provide only general theoretical concepts and translate them into practical experiments, demonstrations, and real-world growing systems.

The greenhouse is a functional production and learning space, and this position plays a central role in maintaining a safe, inclusive, and educationally rich environment that supports student success, workforce preparation, and applied horticultural training.

This is a classified position reporting to the Dean for the School of Business, Entrepreneurship, & Professional Education.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:

Instructional & Educational Support

  • Ensuring documentation of all plants grown in the greenhouse.
  • Communicating with instructors when processes are not being followed or when tasks are needed for successful plant production. 
  • Develops and coordinates scientific and horticultural instructional programs, laboratory procedures, and hands-on demonstrations in collaboration with faculty.
  • Designs and constructs equipment, growing systems, and demonstration models for lecture, laboratory, and field-oriented courses.
  • Supports courses requiring complex design and development, including experiments and demonstrations grounded in current research and applied best practices.
  • Provides follow-up instruction and individualized support to students to reinforce learning outcomes.
  • May teach or assist with the laboratory portion of selected courses.

Greenhouse & Laboratory Operations

  • Maintains greenhouse and laboratory facilities as safe, clean, and operational instructional spaces.
  • Grows and maintains plant collections for instructional use, identification collections, and plant sales.
  • Keeps essential supplies stocked and manages tools, equipment, and workspace necessary for student learning.
  • Coordinates laboratory and greenhouse support, maintenance, and storeroom functions.
  • Inspects, tests, adjusts, and performs major repairs of greenhouse, scientific, and laboratory support equipment.
  • Notifies facilities of electrical, plumbing, or structural issues and coordinates follow-up as needed.

Safety & Compliance

  • Coordinates scientific preparation for laboratory, greenhouse, and field-based courses using appropriate safety procedures, including the handling of hazardous materials such as pesticides, fertilizers, acids, and other regulated substances.
  • Ensures compliance with institutional, state, and federal safety standards.
  • Creates and maintains a learning environment where all students feel safe, supported, and welcome.

Equipment, Inventory & Purchasing

  • Designs, constructs, tests, and evaluates equipment used in instructional demonstrations and applied experiments.
  • Evaluates equipment specifications and makes purchase recommendations.
  • Maintains computerized inventory systems for equipment, chemicals, tools, and supplies.
  • Acts as coordinator of greenhouse, laboratory, or shop spaces, controlling equipment, chemicals, and use of space.

Training, Mentorship & Leadership

  • Provides training for students and faculty in specialized areas such as: Greenhouse systems and operations; Equipment use and maintenance; Applied horticultural techniques; Relevant software or technical tools.
  • May direct assigned personnel, including student employees.
  • Serves as a backup and advocate for students to ensure a positive growing, learning, and working experience.

Administrative Support

  • Supervise and onboard part-time staff, volunteers, and student workers.
  • Coordination of timesheets and other human resource documentation.

Additional Duties

  • Managing sales, wreath-making events, and potting arrangements for events on campus
  • Performs the duties of Instruction & Classroom Support Technician II.
  • May design or develop computer software or digital tools for instructional or analytical laboratory use.
  • Performs related duties as required.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates in Horticulture, Botany,  or a Horticulture-related field, OR HS diploma or equivalent and 4 years of experience in a greenhouse or nursery environment.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Washington State Pesticide Applicator License within 6-months of hire.
  • Valid Washington driver's license and car insurance

 

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is typically performed onsite/in-person. Work is generally physical. Ability to use standard, non-power gardening implements; sit, stand, and crouch for extended periods of time; ability to lift 30 pounds; hand dexterity for weeding, potting, and working with small and large plants. Excellent communication skills are essential. This includes the ability to speak clearly and fully comprehend written and spoken English, as well as the ability to communicate with people for whom English is not their first language. This also includes the ability to produce clearly written documents. Multilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.


WORK SCHEDULE:

40 hours per week. Monday- Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm and as needed for special events. 


COMPENSATION:

Salary is Range 47.  Beginning salary is $49,116 - $55,584 annually, with progressive increases to $66,012, plus a full state benefits package, which includes tuition waivers for college classes, medical, dental, retirement options, and more. The vacation and leave package includes 12 sick days per year, 11 scheduled holidays, 1 personal holiday, 3 personal leave days, and 14 vacation days per year (with incremental increases to 24 vacation days per year).
