Job Summary

The I/O Technician is responsible for installing, commissioning, and testing control systems within the data center environment. This includes the monitoring and control of HVAC, power, lighting, and other building automation systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability. This role works closely with engineering and operations teams to verify all systems are functioning efficiently and effectively.

Job Summary
The I/O Technician is responsible for commissioning instrumentation, control devices, and electrical systems that support Building Management Systems (BMS) and Energy Power Management Systems (EPMS) in mission-critical data center environments. This role requires hands-on field work validating sensors, instruments, electrical devices, and control communications, combined with office-based documentation and reporting. The I/O Technician ensures all instrumentation and electrical devices are properly installed, correctly tagged, functionally verified, and successfully communicating with SCADA and control systems before operational handoff.

Key Responsibilities
BMS Instrumentation Commissioning:
  • Commission all instrumentation and control panels across HVAC systems including air handling units, rooftop units, dehumidification systems, heat trace, and chiller yards
  • Perform loop checks to verify instruments communicate correctly with SCADA and control panels
  • Verify all tags and labels are correct on instruments and wires
  • Identify and document installation errors including wrong instruments, incorrect tags, and improper terminal connections
  • Conduct field measurements, function testing, and lube level verification to validate system operation
EPMS Electrical Device Commissioning:
  • Commission approximately 2,500–3,000 electrical devices per building
  • Validate communication parameters configured by equipment vendors
  • Verify physical cable connections from devices to network switches are functional
  • Configure devices for VLAN integration and connectivity to SCADA systems
  • Support L4 commissioning contractors conducting functionality testing and circuit breaker trip verification
  • Troubleshoot communication and connectivity issues between devices and control systems
Documentation & Reporting:
  • Upload daily reports, checklists, and commissioning records via iPad and field management tools
  • Maintain accurate records of all commissioning activities, test results, and corrective actions
  • Document installation errors, non-conformances, and resolution status
  • Generate commissioning reports for handoff to operations teams
Collaboration & Coordination:
  • Work closely with commissioning engineers, controls specialists, and L4 contractors to ensure seamless execution
  • Communicate findings and issues clearly to engineering and operations teams
  • Support system integration activities and coordinate with multiple trades
Qualifications
Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's degree in electrical, mechanical, or controls technology is preferred
Required Experience:
  • Minimum 2+ years of hands-on field experience in instrumentation commissioning, electrical systems, or controls-related work
  • Demonstrated experience performing loop checks and verifying sensor/device communications
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems and control panel interactions
  • Experience reading electrical schematics, P&IDs, and control system documentation
  • Ability to interpret tag nomenclature and verify correct device labeling and connectivity
Preferred Experience:
  • Background in data center, building automation, or mission-critical facilities commissioning
  • Experience with BMS or EPMS systems
  • Familiarity with VLAN configuration and network connectivity concepts
  • Knowledge of HVAC, electrical, and cooling infrastructure
  • Prior experience with iPad-based field documentation and reporting tools
  • Exposure to Ethernet/IP or industrial communication protocols
Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting electrical schematics and P&IDs
  • Loop check and function test execution
  • SCADA system basics and control panel communication
  • Tag verification and installation documentation
  • Measurement and diagnostic equipment operation (multimeters, pressure gauges, etc.)
  • Network connectivity and device configuration concepts
Soft Skills:
  • Strong attention to detail and precision-oriented mindset
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities
  • Clear communicator capable of documenting findings accurately
  • Proactive and self-directed in field execution
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Safety-conscious and compliance-focused
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments
