General Description

The Energy Assessor Trainee will work alongside The Sustainable Living Center’s Energy Assessor to learn by observation and hands-on, to perform energy assessments and audits of homes and businesses. Concurrently, trainee will attend online training at the Sustainable Living Center office. Coursework will also require offsite, including offsite/overnight training to attain Building Analyst Technician certification. Training follows the Building Performance Institute training scheme. Hours generally follow a traditional work week, but some weekend and/or after-hours work may be required. Prior experience in building, home improvement, or related experience is preferred. Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred. After receiving certification, and upon mutual agreement, trainee will be eligible for a compensation review.

Specific WORK REQUIREMENTS

The Energy Assessor Trainee will:

  1. Assist and learn from the Energy Assessor, how to perform energy assessments of homes and businesses
  2. Perform energy audits of homes and businesses as assigned or scheduled under direction and supervision of the Energy Assessor
  3. Investigate and record, via photos and notes - using a tablet, the results of surveying attic, under floors, walls, windows, doors, weather-stripping, caulking, crawlspace, vapor barrier, thermostat, exterior/perimeter, fireplace dampers, water heater, HVAC ducts, furnace filter, air sealing, ventilation, appliances, heat pump/furnace, and other applicable components of the home and field diagnostics
  4. Attend online and classroom training, including exam and proctoring (field exam) to obtain Building Performance Institute Building Analyst Technician certification
  5. Gain familiarity and comfort with program onboarding, forms, income verification, scheduling, and other tasks integral to the assessor position
  6. Assist with community outreach/workshop(s) on the benefits of building analysis and the Community Energy Efficiency Program - as applicable
  7. Attend team meetings, become familiar with all Sustainable Living Center programs, cross-train where time allows
  8. Other duties as assigned

 

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting and in the field. Travel to offsite training may be required with potential for overnight stays needed. Work will require surveying confined spaces, such as beneath floors, in crawl spaces or in attics.  Work may include exposure to dusty, wet, muddy, poorly ventilated, or unsanitary environments. Possible contaminants could include, but are not limited to, asbestos, mold, mildew, sewage, insects, dust, animal remains, animal waste, and exposed nails or screws—conditions that require the use of safety devices, such as masks, gloves, goggles, overalls, etc. (provided). Trainee must exercise good judgement in assessing conditions prior to exposure and will need to ensure they are very aware of their surroundings, the corresponding risks, and attention to OSHA rules and requirements. During training, the trainee will assist the SLC assessor in setting up equipment, stowing equipment, taking notes, speaking with homeowners and/or other onsite individual and discussing findings with the assessor. Trainee must present a neat appearance that fosters a good impression of the SLC and the CEEP program. Trainee must be articulate and comfortable speaking and interacting with coworkers and community members participating in the program, including spending time in participant homes, rental properties, vacant properties and small businesses.

General Physical/Mental Requirements

 

  1. Mobility:  Climbing and descending stairs and ladders, stooping and crawling, pushing, dragging, and carrying materials and/or equipment, sitting for long periods of time, driving
  2. Judgement:  Situations encountered may be unclear and require good judgement and analysis to ensure safety, accurate data collection, and adherence to worker safety requirements
  3. Attention to detail: Complete reporting and assessments accurately and completely
  4. Concentration:  Must successfully complete training requirements and coursework to achieve Certification
  5. Temperament:  Must demonstrate enthusiasm for work and use tact and diplomacy when explaining building characteristics affecting the home’s energy use to the homeowner.  Must be able to work independently and without supervision as well as enjoy working as part of the energy services team.
  6. Communication: Effective communication skills required. Bilingual Spanish language proficiency is strongly preferred
  7. Knowledge of building principals and/or construction experience is beneficial to success in this position
