Job Purpose:
Supports research by maintaining the histology laboratory; performing technical procedures required for preparing tissue/cells for examination at the light microscopic level.

Duties:
* Supports various research applications by determining methods of tissue fixation, processing, and staining.

* Receives samples into the laboratory by recording the order in which they were received; trimming fixed tissues; detecting abnormal structures/lesions in tissues; orienting abnormalities for sectioning.

* Processes samples by applying tissue-specific schedules to specimens; imbedding tissues in paraffin; using microtome and cryostat for tissue sectioning.

* Prepares slides and completes staining by utilizing routine, as well as, special stains; developing and maintaining positive controls for special stains.

* Prepares histological specimens by utilizing specialized techniques, such as, frozen sectioning, micro biopsies, embryo sectioning, bone demineralization, in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical staining, as well as routine procedures.

* Maintains quality by controlling tissues, fixative, slides and stains; preparing stains, buffers, and other reagents.

* Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by performing routine laboratory cleaning; monitoring storage and disposal of chemicals in compliance with institutional, state, and federal standards; following and enforcing laboratory procedures.

* Keeps laboratory equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs; training others in the use of laboratory equipment.

* Keeps laboratory chemicals and supplies ready by maintaining stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.

* Maintains histology laboratory inventory by providing storage and supporting data for tissues and paraffin blocks.

* Provides information by communicating with research staff regarding scope and completion of work; preparing written reports.

* Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.

* Enhances histology laboratory and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Skills/Qualifications:
2-5 yrs small biopsies, derm, renal & simple routine specimens under supervision of a Pathology Assistant and Supervisor. Associates in Science & completion of approved Histology accredited program OR Bachelor's Degree OR Equivalent experience. NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License OR Certified Histology Tech OR Clinical Lab Tech from NYS Ed Dept.
