Job Title: Grant Accountant

Position Summary

The Grant Accountant is responsible for the financial management, compliance, and reporting of government and private grants supporting energy efficiency, housing, and affordability programs. This role ensures accurate accounting, strong internal controls, timely reporting, and full compliance with grant requirements and applicable regulations. The Grant Accountant partners closely with program, finance, and leadership teams to support the organization’s mission through sound financial stewardship.


Key Responsibilities

Grant Financial Management

  • Manage accounting for multiple federal, state, and private grants from award setup through closeout
  • Track grant revenues and expenditures to ensure accuracy, allowability, and compliance with grant agreements
  • Monitor grant budgets and spending against approved allocations
  • Prepare and maintain detailed grant schedules and reconciliations

Reporting & Compliance

  • Prepare timely and accurate financial reports for grantors, including invoices, reimbursement requests, and periodic financial statements
  • Ensure compliance with Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200), state regulations, and funder-specific requirements
  • Assist with monitoring subrecipients and reviewing financial reports for compliance
  • Support single audits, grant audits, and funder reviews by preparing documentation and responding to inquiries

Accounting & Controls

  • Record grant-related journal entries and ensure proper revenue recognition
  • Maintain strong internal controls over grant funds
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual closings related to grant activity
  • Collaborate with finance leadership on policies and procedures related to grants management

Collaboration & Support

  • Work closely with program staff to support budgeting, forecasting, and allowable cost determinations
  • Provide guidance and training to program teams on grant financial requirements
  • Participate in process improvements and system enhancements related to grant accounting

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of grant accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit or government-funded environment
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state grant regulations (including Uniform Guidance)
  • Experience with grant reporting, budgeting, and audit preparation
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and accounting software
  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Preferred:

  • Experience with energy efficiency, housing, or human services programs
  • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP)
  • Experience managing multiple funding sources and cost allocations
  • CPA or progress toward certification
