Job Description
Our Fire Department works a 48/96 shift schedule. The current hiring wage range for this position is $31.56 - $37.87 per hour. A typical firefighter will work an estimated 2912 scheduled hours and will earn between $94,000 - $113,000 annually. The City currently pays an additional offset for the scheduled hours over the FLSA allowed amount (8 hours of half time per 18 day-cycle).
Responsible to supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of a fire company responsible for providing fire services, emergency medical, hazardous materials response and emergency rescue services; and to perform related work as required.
This employee works under the direct supervision of the Battalion Chief and the general supervision of the Deputy Fire Chief and the Fire Chief. All City employees work under the general direction of the City Manager.
Day-to-day supervision of assigned staff as the first-line supervisor, acts as the officer-in-charge when on shift in absence of a Battalion Chief or higher-level management staff. Please submit and application, resume, and associated documentation.

- Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of a fire company responsible for providing fire services including fire suppression, emergency medical, hazardous materials response, emergency rescue services and general fire prevention
- Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing effective fire suppression, emergency medical services and general fire prevention; implement approved policies and procedures
- Direct firefighting operations until relieved by a superior officer; respond to fire alarms as an incident commander, assuming responsibility for the supervision, performance and safety of assigned firefighting personnel on the scene of an emergency incident
- Supervise and assist in rendering emergency medical services at an emergency incident; analyze and take command of patient care with full responsibility for the patient(s) until relieved by proper medical personnel
- Assist in coordinating the maintenance and repair of fire equipment and apparatus such as hydrants, trucks and support equipment; ensure proper maintenance of station facilities; maintain station supplies
- Participate in monitoring employee performance objectives; prepare employee performance reviews; provide assistance to personnel under stress due to incidents; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures
- Identify the fire training needs of company personnel including such areas as driving and operating equipment and the use of hoses, nozzles, ladders and various portable equipment; provide training in emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, rescue, area location, aircraft emergency response, physical fitness and report writing
- Prepare reports, forms, recommendations and other required administrative documentation as needed
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- An Associates Degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university
- or a minimum of 60 semester hours
- Seven (7) years previous full-time fire service experience
- must have performed as an AEMT or Paramedic for a minimum of three (3) years
- Minimum of 5 years as a full-time firefighter of which 3 years as an Engineer, CCP, or Engine Boss are preferred
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered
Certifications:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Utah Class D Driver's license
- Firefighter I, II and Hazardous Materials Operations Certification
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification
- Successful completion of ICS 100, 200, 700 & 800
- NWCG Wildland Firefighter Certification
- Ice Rescue Tech Certification
- Personal Water Craft Rescue Tech Certification
- Utah Paramedic or AEMT Certification
- Apparatus Driver Operator & Aerial Certification
- Fire Instructor I Certification
- Fire Officer I Certification
- Fire Inspector I or Company Officer Inspector Certification
- Leadership Development Module I Progress is preferred
- NWCG Wildland Firefighter Certification, Ice Rescue Technician, and PWC Rescue Technician preferred, If an applicant does not currently have one (or more) of these certifications, they must to obtained them within one (1) year of their hire date
- This recruitment will involve a Panel Interview, a Presentation by the applicant, a Tactical Command Evaluation, and an In-Basket evaluation
- This recruitment also involves a 360 degree feedback component which could including a Peer Survey
Additional Requirements:
- Must not have been convicted or plead "no contest" to any 1st or 2nd degree misdemeanor while employed with the City or within the last three (3) years (whichever is greater)
- Must pass required physicals, drug screenings, and background checks
- Must be a non-smoker and refrained from use of any tobacco, vaping, or similar products(s) while employed with the City or for the past 12 months (whichever is greater)
- Must have a good driving record free from "at fault" accidents and convictions for violations of criminal traffic infractions to include adjudication withheld while employed with the City or within the last twelve (12) months (whichever is greater)
- a good driving record will include no driver's license suspension while employed with the City or within the last five (5) years (whichever is greater)

Compensation and Benefits
Salary Range:
A typical firefighter working an estimated 2912 scheduled hours, which includes some scheduled/required overtime, will earn between $94,000/yr. - $132,000/yr. annually.
The full wage range is as follows, please note hiring will normally occur at the minimum of the range and will not exceed the midpoint, the hiring wage offered to successful applicants will depend on experience and qualifications:
Minimum - $31.56hr.
Midpoint - $37.87/hr.
Maximum - $44.19/hr.

Other benefits include 170 hours of paid time off (PTO) accrued annually, 40 hours of short-term medical accrued annually, 132 hours of holidays annually, and a 48/96 work schedule.
