Engen Contracting (ECI) is a commercial general contractor based in Austin, Texas focused on ground-up and interior commercial construction throughout Central Texas, with a strong track record in retail, restaurants, self-storage, medical, child development/education, office, industrial and specialty commercial projects. Our projects typically range from $2M – $10M+, with a mix of negotiated and competitive hard-bid opportunities.

Our company is built on a team of professionals who take pride in their work, hold themselves accountable, and continually strive to raise the standard of commercial construction. We believe great projects are the result of strong relationships, disciplined processes, and individuals who care deeply about the work they deliver.

We are currently seeking a Commercial Construction Estimator who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys building relationships, managing the bid process, and helping position projects for successful execution.

The Role
The Estimator plays a critical role in the continued growth and success of Engen Contracting. This role is responsible not only for developing complete and competitive estimates, but also for helping Engen Contracting pursue the right opportunities, build strong trade partner engagement, and create a clean handoff into operations. This position leads the preconstruction effort for ground-up and tenant improvement commercial projects, ensuring bids are competitive, thorough, and strategically positioned.

The ideal candidate understands that estimating is not simply about numbers — it is about risk management, relationship development, and thoughtful project planning before construction begins.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the bid process from initial document review through final proposal submission
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and scope analysis using Bluebeam and related estimating tools
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and consultants
  • Identify and evaluate project opportunities and bid invitations
  • Review construction documents and coordinate RFIs during the bidding phase
  • Organize and manage subcontractor bid coverage and vendor commitments
  • Analyze subcontractor proposals and verify scope alignment
  • Draft scopes of work, qualifications, and clarifications for proposals
  • Coordinate internal bid reviews and estimating strategy discussions
  • Develop preliminary project schedules using Microsoft Project
  • Utilize Procore to distribute bid packages and track subcontractor participation
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate existing conditions when necessary
  • Support project handoff and coordination with Project Managers and Superintendents after project award
  • Participate in preconstruction meetings with clients, architects, and consultants
  • Assist with conceptual budgeting and early-stage project cost analysis
  • Identify value engineering opportunities and constructability considerations during bidding
  • Evaluate project logistics, schedule constraints, and procurement risks
  • Maintain historical cost data and contribute to internal estimating databases
  • Consistently schedule and conduct meetings with prospective clients to build future opportunities
  • Maintain proactive client communication and responsiveness, including strong phone engagement to support relationship development and new business opportunities

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of estimating experience with a commercial general contractor preferred
  • Experience with ground-up and tenant improvement projects valued at $2M – $10M+ at a minimum
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, Procore, and Bluebeam
  • Strong knowledge of commercial construction assemblies, materials, and subcontractor scopes
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously
  • Clear and professional communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to evaluate construction risk
  • Self-motivated with strong follow-through and accountability
