The Environmental Specialist is responsible for managing and supporting a wide range of environmental projects across regulatory compliance, permitting, assessment, and remediation activities. This role involves both office-based project management and hands-on fieldwork, requiring strong technical knowledge, communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
The Environmental Specialist works closely with clients, regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and internal team members to ensure environmental projects are completed safely, on time, and in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This position may also support business development efforts and mentor junior staff as appropriate.
This role involves up to 50% travel, typically within a 100-mile radius, to project sites, client locations, and regulatory meetings.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage environmental projects including wetland delineations, permitting, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), site remediation, and sustainability initiatives
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations, including EPA, NEPA, RCRA, CERCLA, and related requirements
- Prepare technical reports, permit applications, regulatory filings, and project documentation
- Perform and oversee environmental fieldwork, including coordination and oversight of subcontractors
- Oversee data collection, sampling, and analysis for air, water, and soil quality
- Draft figures and site plans using CADD software
- Read and interpret civil engineering plans, maps, and specifications
- Apply mathematical concepts such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry for field survey analysis
- Interact and communicate effectively with clients, regulatory agencies, and internal teams
- Manage project budgets, schedules, and deliverables
- Mentor and train junior staff as appropriate
- Stay current with changes in environmental laws, policies, and industry best practices
- Support business development efforts by identifying opportunities, assisting with proposals, and contributing to project bids
- Carry out all job functions safely and in accordance with Health and Safety Plans and industry standards
- Respond to inquiries or concerns in a timely and professional manner
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Education Requirements
- Bachelor"s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geology, or a related field required
- Master"s degree preferred
Experience Requirements
- 7 or more years of relevant environmental experience preferred
- Experience in consulting, energy, or industrial sectors is strongly preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Pennsylvania Driver"s License required
- OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER Certification preferred
- Professional certifications such as PE, PG, CHMM, QEP, or similar are preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and permitting processes
- Proven project management skills, including budgeting and scheduling
- Proficiency with environmental modeling tools and software such as GIS, field data processing programs, and Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to explain and interpret technical concepts, policies, and designs
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse workforce
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Standard workdays may range from 8 to 12 hours
- Ability to sit or stand for up to 8 hours and walk for up to 4 hours per day
- Ability to travel up to 6 hours roundtrip as needed
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds
- Fieldwork may involve bending, squatting, reaching, and working outdoors in varying conditions
