EHS Manager – Chemical Manufacturing (Confidential Client)

Full-Time | Onsite | Relocation Assistance Available

A long-established, privately held chemical manufacturing company is seeking an experienced EHS Manager to lead all environmental, health, and safety programs at its primary production facility. This opportunity comes as the current EHS leader prepares for retirement after seven years in the role. The company aims to have the new hire onboard before his final day, with a strong transition plan supported by his continued availability for consulting.

This is a highly visible role reporting directly to the Plant Manager, with regular interaction and direct access to company ownership and the CEO. The workforce is deeply engaged, bought into the mission of safety, and supported by established safety champions throughout the plant.

SUMMARY

The EHS Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the environmental, health, and safety programs for a chemical manufacturing facility. This role ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, promotes a proactive safety culture, minimizes risk, and protects both employees and the surrounding environment. The position carries significant influence, high visibility with senior leadership, and the opportunity to lead a committed workforce with strong organizational support.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety Program Development & Implementation

  • Develop, execute, and continuously improve EHS policies, procedures, and training programs tailored to chemical manufacturing processes.
  • Partner with plant leadership and internal safety champions to strengthen safety engagement and ownership.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Prepare required permits, reports, filings, and documentation.
  • Serve as primary liaison with city and state agencies regarding air, water, and wastewater compliance.

Risk Assessment & Hazard Control

  • Conduct routine risk assessments, hazard analyses, and job safety evaluations.
  • Implement engineering and administrative controls, including Process Safety Management (PSM) initiatives when applicable.

Incident Investigation

  • Lead investigations of incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions.
  • Perform root‑cause analyses and implement corrective and preventive actions.

Training & Awareness

  • Coordinate and deliver EHS training, including emergency response, hazardous material handling, environmental compliance, and safe work practices.

Safety Inspections & Audits

  • Conduct regular audits and inspections of equipment, operations, and facility conditions.
  • Track, analyze, and report safety performance metrics.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Maintain emergency response plans and conduct drills related to chemical releases, fires, severe weather, and other potential events.

Employee Engagement

  • Drive a strong safety-first culture through communication, committee involvement, and daily on-the-floor interaction.

Environmental & Waste Management

  • Oversee environmental programs including chemical storage, emissions controls, waste handling, burn-off operations, wastewater processes, and retention ponds.

Documentation & Recordkeeping

  • Maintain accurate EHS documentation including training logs, incident reports, inspections, and regulatory records.

Coordination with External Agencies

  • Communicate with environmental and safety regulatory bodies at the local, state, and federal levels.

Continuous Improvement

  • Use data, audits, and employee feedback to drive continuous improvement across all EHS programs.

MUST-HAVE QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must meet all of the following to be considered:

  • EHS management experience in a chemical manufacturing environment
  • Strong environmental compliance background, especially with air, water, and wastewater programs
  • Experience working with local/state environmental agencies and regulatory permitting
  • Proven ability to lead safety programs within a plant environment
  • Onsite leadership experience interacting with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to manage environmental systems (wastewater, emissions, chemical recycling, etc.)

PREFERRED (Not Required)

  • German language skills
  • Experience in privately held or mid-sized manufacturing environments
  • Familiarity with chemical recycling, burn-off systems, or large-site environmental responsibility
