Hiring Wage/Salary Range     22.00-24.00

Professional Experience/ Qualifications    

Minimum one year experience in a museum or other arts or cultural institution, or demonstrable equivalent experience.

Commitment to decolonizing, equity, and inclusion practices, preferably in a museum context.

Ability to work collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students on a daily basis.

Strong writing and editing skills.

Flexibility and the ability to think creatively.

Knowledge of relevant computer programs (Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, Adobe Creative Cloud applications, Canva)

Preferred Qualifications       

Additional experience (more than 1 year) in a museum or other arts or cultural institution, preferably with museums at Colgate University, or demonstrable equivalent experience.

Previous supervisory experience, such as overseeing undergraduate student employees or interns.

Knowledge of specialized museum computer programs (The Museum System, eMuseum)

Education       

First consideration will be given to Colgate graduating students

The University Museums consists of Picker Art Gallery and the Longyear Museum of Anthropology. Reporting to two co-directors, this position will have primary responsibility for supporting student engagement and programming for both museums. They will work alongside colleagues whose roles also span the two museums and their collections. The University Museums are at an exciting point in their history. As a key component of Colgate’s ambitious Middle Campus Plan for Arts, Creativity, and Innovation, our team is currently envisioning and redefining how academic museums fit into the contemporary liberal arts experience and into the cultural fabric of the regional communities into which the campus is embedded. Our strategic plan prioritizes implementing decolonizing practices across museum operations, creating a more inclusive and accessible program, increasing student and faculty engagement, enhancing collaborations on and off campus, and developing collections that represent a wider range of identities and experiences.

Accountabilities

This position plays a supporting role in promoting student engagement with the museums, assisting with the coordination of museum programming, and overseeing student employees and ambassadors. The person filling the position will accountable for the following:

 

Working closely with museum staff, university departments, and community partners to develop, implement, and oversee the museum’s schedule of public programs.

Engaging in best practices for bringing diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion, as well as decolonizing principles, to all museum programs.

Recruiting, training, and supervising student employees, gallery attendants, and student docents, including managing student schedules to ensure staffing needs are met during gallery open hours and for all public programs.

Creating, implementing, and overseeing a comprehensive training program to impart knowledge and skills for student employees and interns.

Overseeing the Museum Ambassador program

Arrange meetings with student groups on campus to encourage collaborations.

Drafting, designing, and coordinating communications about University Museums programs to various audiences across campus— especially through digital formats, such as social media channels and e-newsletters

Assisting with the coordination and facilitation of Colgate class visits to exhibitions and collections. Facilitating museum visits for a variety of audiences, including student organizations, K-12 groups, life-long learners, and community groups.

Performing other job related duties as assigned.
