Job Summary and Qualifications

Role Summary:The Emergency Department (ED) pharmacist is responsible for ensuring accurate and appropriate medication management by verifying and interpreting orders, documenting inpatient records, and clarifying unclear or inappropriate prescriptions. They ensure evidence-based therapies, monitor for interactions and contraindications, and develop and execute drug therapy protocols. The pharmacist interprets culture and susceptibility data, detects and reports adverse reactions and errors, and engages in antimicrobial stewardship. Collaborating with the healthcare team, the ED pharmacist answers drug information questions, documents clinical interventions, and participates in rounds and follow-ups. They mentor and train pharmacy staff, comply with facility schedules, attend code events, and provide education on clinical guidelines. The pharmacist also participates in committees to establish and implement medication policies, reviews order sets and protocols, and initiates timely consultations. In quality assurance, they provide drug information, partake in quality improvement activities, model technology safety functions, and support adverse event management. They train for disaster preparedness, optimize automated dispensing, and offer technical support for pharmacy systems. Financially, they minimize drug costs and sustain the formulary. The ED pharmacist maintains professional development, oversees pharmacy services, and ensures adherence to protocols, contributing to the overall goals of the department and hospital while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with standards.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Required Education:B.S. or Pharm D degree in Pharmacy
  • Required License:Maintains current Pharmacist licensure, Obtains and Maintains Advanced Life Support (ACLS) Certification within 3 months of employment, Obtains and Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 3 months of employment.
  • Preferred License:Pharmacist Board Certification within 1 year of eligibility
  • Required Experience:Graduate of an accredited PGY - 1 residency program or 3 years relevant Emergency Department/ Critical Care Experience hospital experience
  • Preferred Experience:Graduate of an accredited PGY - 2 residency program in Critical Care or Emergency Medicine
