Job Summary and Qualifications

The Trauma Program Director (TPD) provides strategic, operational, and administrative leadership for a Trauma Center, ensuring full compliance with American College of Surgeons (ACS) Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) standards, state trauma regulations, and hospital policies. The TPD partners closely with the Trauma Medical Director (TMD), executive leadership, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, evidence-based trauma care, drive performance improvement, and advance the trauma program’s clinical, educational, research, and community outreach missions.


What you will do in this role:

  • Oversight of all aspects of the Trauma Programs at Houston Northwest Medical Center.
  • Ensure 24/7 trauma coverage and readiness in collaboration with nursing leadership, physicians, and ancillary departments.
  • Collaborates with nursing management and staff nurses in defining, guiding, and evaluating nursing practice in the provision of trauma care; including creation of policies and procedures related to trauma care.
  • Prepares trauma program reports for facility administration, Quality Council, Quality Management, other internal requestors and external agencies as needed.
  • Maintains credentials and CME files for trauma surgeons and emergency physicians participating in the trauma program.
  • Maintain trauma policies, protocols, and performance standards in accordance with evidence-based best practices.
  • Assumes responsibility of acquiring and evaluating new knowledge and skills in the area of trauma nursing.
  • Collaborates with others in local, regional, state, and national trauma systems in performance improvement activities, benchmarking, and trauma education.
  • Lead preparation for and successful completion of ACS verification and state surveys, including document submission, site visits, and corrective action plans.
  • Analyze trauma outcomes, mortality, complications, and benchmark data using TQIP and internal dashboards and assesses and evaluates all aspects of the care rendered to the trauma patient and assures continual readiness for inspection of the trauma program.
  • Oversees trauma Performance Improvement (PI) activities and works in collaboration with Quality Management to assure integration of trauma service PI activities into organizational mission and goals.
  • Lead multidisciplinary trauma PI meetings, ensuring identification of trends, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Oversee the Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) program.
  • Organizes and lead the Trauma Services Committee.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of the trauma registry as well as ensures timely and accurate entries into the Texas State Trauma Registry
  • Analyzes registry data on the trauma patient population to identify trends for strategic planning and performance improvement.
  • Coordinates trauma education concerning all phases of trauma care, including prevention and rehabilitation.
  • Collaborates with the facility's Education Department in planning, providing, and evaluating trauma-nursing education.
  • Oversees planning, implementation, and evaluation of community education and prevention programs.
  • In collaboration with the Trauma Medical Director, facilities trauma program strategic planning as well as researches best practices to test relevant theories in providing better patient care.
  • Evaluates and implements appropriate research findings in nursing practice.
  • Assists the nursing staff in understanding and participating in research studies.
  • Assists with appropriate in-house research studies.
  • Partner with ED, ICU, OR, Radiology, Blood Bank, and ancillary services to optimize trauma patient flow and outcomes. • In collaboration with the Finance Department, evaluates income sources, payment, and charges for trauma patients.
  • Monitor trauma activation processes, throughput, ICU utilization, OR access, and discharge planning.
  • Support implementation of trauma clinical pathways and evidence-based protocols.
  • Serves as a liaison to administration, representing the trauma program on various hospital and community committees to enhance and foster a fiscally sound trauma program.
  • Ensure compliance with Level I education requirements, including resident education, continuing medical education (CME), and nursing competencies.
  • Support trauma research activities, including participation in registries, studies, and scholarly dissemination.
  • Oversee community injury prevention programs and outreach initiatives, aligned with identified trauma epidemiology.
  • Maintain relationships with EMS agencies and provide ongoing education and feedback.
  • Ensure compliance with NTDB/TQIP reporting requirements.
  • Utilize trauma data to drive operational, clinical, and financial decision-making.
  • In collaboration with the Trauma Medical Director and Administration, promotes regionalization of trauma care; acts as a resource for the facility to promote optimal trauma care; participates in professional outreach educational programs; provides follow up information to referring institutions / agencies; promotes optimal trauma care within the state and region by acting as a resource to area professionals, legislative groups, etc.
  • Complies with requirements for maintenance and completion of relevant continuing education, community engagement and meeting attendance, as required by the Texas Department of Health and the American College of Surgeons.

What qualifications you will need:
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Spt
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course
  • TNCC Instructor
  • (RN) Registered Nurse license required
  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing required
  • Masters Degree in Nursing required
  • Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course, or PALS Pediatric Adv Life Supt
  • Minimum of 3 years clinical experience in a trauma center preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years nursing experience in an ED, ICU or Critical Care area
