JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Surgical Services is responsible to the Chief Nursing Officer for the overall 24-hour operations of assigned areas of responsibility. Demonstrates clear communication and accountable decision making with Associates, Physicians and other Directors; represents the hospital in local, state and regional activities; practices a collaborative leadership style which facilitates Associate and Physician involvement in development of clinical practice standards; innovatively approaches fiscal management; ensures the quality of patient care is consistent with hospital-wide standards of care and regulations of the Texas Nurse Practice Act, Texas Department of Health, DNV and other regulatory agencies. Is responsible for business planning in areas of responsibility and accountable for negotiated measurable targets including product line development, implementation and maintenance. The director supervises and directs the delivery of patient care and care related services for the OR, PAT, ENDO, PACU, Cath Lab in accordance with administrative policies, as well hospital vision, mission, and strategies. The director works collaboratively with staff, physicians, and other disciplines within the hospital to create a system of safe, quality health care.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.
  • Follows the organizations Guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Promotes a culture of safety for patients and Associates through proper identification, proper reporting, documentation and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment.
  • Develops and secures approval of and administers capital and operating budgets for assigned service areas in cooperation with the CNO.
  • Maintains cooperative working relationships with physicians, Hospital departments and associates necessary in order to obtain solutions to problems and improve coordination of services provided and improve patient, physician and Associate Satisfaction.
  • Maintains and enhances Hospital's public and Associate's relations efforts through contacts with patients, visitors and staff, and through investigation and resolution of complaints or concerns.
  • Plans and administers directly and through subordinate supervisory personnel, the effective management and delivery or quality patient care for nursing, encompassing several units and all shifts, within a broad grouping of patient services/units in accordance with department, Hospital and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Participates in developing department-wide goals and objectives, and in designing and implementing appropriate plans to meet agreed-upon goals in cooperation with other department managers. Assists in developing and meeting appropriate goals and objectives for each unit.
  • Participates in developing department-wide policies and procedures and ensures approved policies and procedures effectively. Develops and secures approval of Patient policies and procedures for assigned Units.
  • Promotes continuous improvement in methods of delivery of patient care by revising and developing nursing standards, implementing appropriate corrective actions to resolve discrepancies and ensuring adherence to performance improvement initiatives. Prepares special and recurring reports and analyses for Nursing operations.
  • Serves as professional resource person to subordinates in resolving patient care or management problems.
  • Develops and maintains a variety of external contacts with educational institutions, regulatory and service agencies, community and professional organizations.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences, seminars and the like.
  • Provides image-building opportunities for promotion of the assigned Product lines. Seeks positive public relations and media opportunities.
  • Maintains the physical environment of assigned departments and provides an aesthetically pleasing surroundings for patients, families, Associates and physicians.
  • Promotes growth and profitability of the service lines for which he/she is responsible.
  • Supportive of the compliance program set forth by the organization and demonstrated by:
    • Upholds the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance.
    • Adheres to dealing appropriately and fairly with employee misconduct.
    • Enforces all compliance policies as they pertain to his/her area.
    • Provides and assures timely compliance education as requested by the Regional Compliance & Safety Officer and/or through corporate initiatives.
  • Sets an example to all staff in their daily activities.
  • Supports, reviews, and understands JCAHO's compliance activities and expectations. Ensures departmental compliance with DNV standards.

 

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Approximately five to seven years progressively more responsible related work experience, with two years concurrent management experience in assigned specialty area, necessary in order to gain comprehensive knowledge of the organization, operation and coordination of several patient care units, in-depth and up-to-date knowledge of patient care theories and practices, and ability to contribute to overall department administration.

SKILLS:

  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to provide effective leadership, maintain a variety of internal and external contacts, and work cooperatively with a variety of Hospital managers, executives and staff.
  • Analytical abilities necessary in order to evaluate delivery of care systems and nursing results; respond to deficiencies by identifying and implementing appropriate corrective action; develop and administer procedures and budgets; and organize and direct work of subordinates.

LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Current State of Texas license as a Registered Nurse required.

EDUCATION & TRAINING:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Required.
  • Master's Degree Preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of nursing theory, practice and administration in order to direct planning and implementation of patient care over multiple units, and to prepare related reports, analyses, policies and budgets.
