Frederick, MD | Full-Time | On-site

About Us
Miscellaneous Metals, Inc. is a leading miscellaneous steel fabrication and installation company (Division 5) serving commercial and industrial customers across the Washington, D.C. metro area. We are seeking a senior operational leader to oversee and integrate company-wide operations and support long-term leadership.

The Role
This role is best suited for candidates who have grown through project management and operations within a Division 5 steel fabrication company and have direct experience managing the full lifecycle of commercial construction projects—from shop drawings and detailing, through fabrication, to field installation/erection.

The Director of Operations is responsible for driving execution across multiple active projects simultaneously, ensuring alignment between project managers, detailing, shop fabrication, and field crews. This is a hands-on, production-driven leadership role where success is measured by on-time project delivery, fabrication sequencing, and coordination with field installation schedules.

The ideal candidate has operated in an environment where:

  • Fabrication is driven by project schedules, not production forecasts
  • Work is prioritized daily based on installation needs, field readiness, and GC demands
  • Shop output must align with approved drawings, revisions, and project timelines
  • Multiple projects compete for shop capacity and require constant coordination and reprioritization

This role oversees day-to-day operations across Project Management, Engineering/Detailing, Fabrication, Field Operations, and Safety, ensuring projects move efficiently from contract award through installation. The position reports directly to the Owner and works closely with the President.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the Project Management team, ensuring project schedules, fabrication priorities, and installation sequencing are aligned across all active jobs
  • Oversee weekly production and coordination meetings addressing schedule conflicts, fabrication bottlenecks, and field-driven priority changes
  • Partner with the Shop Manager to prioritize daily and weekly fabrication based on project schedules, approved drawings, and field installation needs
  • Oversee Engineering/Detailing to ensure the timely release of accurate shop drawings and manage revisions cycles
  • Coordinate closely with Field Operations to ensure fabrication output supports installation schedules
  • Establish and monitor operational performance metrics related to fabrication output, rework, on-time project delivery, and labor efficiency
  • Lead monthly Safety Committee meetings and promote a strong safety culture
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, safety, and quality standards
  • Partner with finance on operational budgets and cost controls
  • Serve as a liaison across operations, sales, estimating, HR, and customer service
Required Industry Experience (NON-NEGOTIABLE)
  • 10+ years of progressive operations leadership experience specifically within Division 5 steel fabrication for commercial construction (e.g. stairs, railings, platforms, etc.)
  • Proven experience leading in a project-driven fabrication environment, managing shop drawings and detailing coordination, project managers, and shop operations
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field required; MBA or related Master’s preferred
Additional Requirements
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without a current or future employer visa sponsorship need.
  • Fully on-site role
Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary range $150,000 - $175,000, commensurate with experience
  • Comprehensive benefits package
