Director of Business Development

Be the face of relationship-driven growth for a legacy design-build firm.

J.S. Brown & Co. has spent nearly 50 years earning the trust of homeowners in Central Ohio's most established neighborhoods through thoughtful design, craftsmanship, and a deep understanding of how homes truly work – a legacy of which we're proud. As we continue to grow, we're seeking a Director of Business Development who thrives on relationships, enjoys being visible in the community, and knows how to guide a consultative sales team with clarity, empathy, and accountability. This role is ideal for someone who believes great business is built on trust, collaboration, and long-term relationships. You're a natural relationship-builder who prioritizes relationships over transactional sales. You value helping clients move forward confidently without compromising integrity or process.

What You'll Do

Sales Leadership & Coaching

  • Serve as the primary manager, coach, and leader for our Design Consultant team
  • Guide consultants through client challenges, presentations, and contract decisions
  • Qualify incoming leads and align clients with the right consultant
  • Champion a consultative, relationship-first selling approach
  • Partner closely with company leadership to support long-term vision and growth

Sales & Production Alignment

  • Collaborate with Production leadership to ensure smooth project transitions
  • Help navigate pricing conversations with balance and professionalism
  • Act as a bridge between sales and production to support a solutions-first culture
  • Maintain awareness of production capacity to support a healthy, sustainable backlog

Marketing, Events & Community Presence

  • Collaborate with marketing on strategic events aligned with ideal clients
  • Represent J.S. Brown & Co. at community, chamber, and industry events
  • Build and nurture referral relationships with complementary professionals

Reporting, Systems & Training

  • Use data to track sales trends, closing ratios, and timelines
  • Provide monthly insights to leadership and the sales team
  • Lead ongoing sales training focused on trust, communication, and long-term relationships

What Success Looks Like

Within your first year, success means:

  • A confident, supported sales team that feels coached — not pressured
  • Strong alignment between sales and production
  • Increased visibility in key neighborhoods and referral networks
  • Better-aligned opportunities, not just more leads
  • Clear reporting that informs smarter business decisions

What We're Looking For

  • 7–12 years of experience in consultative, relationship-driven sales or business development
  • 3–5+ years of experience coaching or leading a sales team
  • Experience in design-build, construction, real estate, architecture, or related fields preferred
  • Strong emotional intelligence and communication skills
  • Comfort representing a company authentically in the community
  • CRM or project management experience (Buildertrend a plus)

Compensation & Benefits

This role offers a strong base salary with significant performance upside:

  • Base annual salary: $80,000
  • Quarterly performance bonus
  • Commission on personal sales
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Company-paid disability insurances
  • Basic life insurance
  • PTO and paid holidays
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Mileage reimbursement
  • Cell phone allowance
  • Industry certification courses and maintenance fees
  • Vehicle lettering policy
