Job Description

Plans, organizes and directs the staff and activities of chaplaincy care. Provides chaplaincy care to patient/residents, families and to staff, as appropriate. Manages education and training programs for the institution and liaises with the religious community.
1. Manages the delivery of chaplaincy care to patients, residents, their loved ones and staff of all faith traditions.
• Actively participates in the delivery of chaplaincy care.
• Ensures requests for chaplaincy care are responded to in timely manner.
• Ensures appropriate worship opportunities are provided and ritual and sacramental needs are met.
• Provides leadership to and develops resources for the institution’s diversity and cultural competence program.
2. Manages staff activities
• Selects, develops, manages, and evaluates direct reports; and oversees the development, management and evaluation of indirect reports.
• Ensures adequate scheduling and assigns responsibilities to ensure and equitable distribution of work.
3. Coordinates clergy, pastoral visitors, and volunteers from the religious community.
• Makes visitors aware of policies and procedures that affect their visiting.
• Provides resources including patient lists according to institutional policy.
4. Supports an interdisciplinary approach to chaplaincy care.
• Liaises with other departments such as social work, volunteers, etc.
• Provides orientation for chaplaincy care to other departments, as necessary.
• Serves on institutional committees such as ethics and Institutional Review Board, as appointed.
5. Oversees the use and maintenance of chaplaincy care offices and chapel.
• Ensures proper office supplies, ritual items and religious literature.
• Ensures for the maintenance of office equipment.
• Oversees the scheduling of the chapel.
6. Develops and maintains proper administration procedures for department in accordance with institutional policy.
• Develops and maintains procedures to keep records of chaplaincy activity to communicate with other members of the department and report to department/institution.
• Develops and administers the department’s plan for continuous quality improvement.

7. Contributes to the wider community through publication, teaching, and research.
Authors or co-author materials relevant to spiritual care/pastoral education.
• Participates in teaching/lecturing on a regular or periodic basis as invited.
8. Participates in programs and administrative activities of the institution.
• Participates in regular professional development activities.
• Participates in periodic planning meetings for department directors.
9. Performs related duties, as required.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Theology or equivalent, required. Master's Degree, preferred.
• Certification in one or more of the following: Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) or National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), highly preferred or as needed in support of site program requirements.
• Minimum of seven (7) years progressive experience working within a Chaplaincy setting, required.
• Demonstrated leadership skills and accomplishments relative to the implementation of programmatic initiatives, writing for professional and peer-reviewed journals.
• Strong interpersonal skills needed to facilitate interactions with physicians and other clinical administrative and quality management leadership.
