Defense IT Specialist

Job Summary
The IT Specialist role is a blend of technical, server, and network support, requiring the ability to troubleshoot end-user, server, and network issues. This position is responsible for setting up and maintaining servers, workstations, and the network. Additional duties include monitoring for and troubleshooting potential issues within the environment and performing system patching.
The IT Specialist will oversee and participate in all operational activities, including network system administration, capacity planning, network performance, data and network security, as well as backups and restores. This role requires strong communication and technical skills, adaptability, and effective problem-solving abilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Install, upgrade, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot end-user hardware and software.
  • Manage user identity systems and assist non-IT employees with technical issues and data transfers.
  • Build, maintain, and support physical and virtual server environments, including Ubuntu Linux, Proxmox, and Windows Server.
  • Oversee network activity, systems administration, backup, restoration, and capacity planning (Ubiquiti).
  • Develop and implement server maintenance standard operating procedures.
  • Manage the implementation of new technologies and consult on application projects to ensure proper use of technology and integration into the infrastructure.
  • Provide data and network security.
  • Keep upper management informed through regular reports.
  • Administer Active Directory and the Office 365 tenant.
  • Maintain support and compliance with the NIST/CMMC System Security Plan (SSP) for the Defense Business Unit.
  • Participate as the IT liaison for the business unit in the Defense leadership stand-up.
  • Partner with and provide team support to the Cybersecurity Analyst for the business unit.

Education and Experience (Required)
  • Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Management Information Systems.
  • U.S. Citizen status allowing for International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) compliance.
  • Progressive IT experience with at least 5 years planning, installing, supporting, securing, and maintaining networks, servers, and cloud environments.
  • Experience with capacity planning and performance monitoring techniques and tools.
  • Ability to solve complex problems and manage a variety of variable situations.

Education and Experience (Preferred)
  • Progressive IT experience with 7 years planning, installing, supporting, securing, and maintaining networks, servers, and cloud environments.
  • Experience with NIST 800-171 and CMMC compliance.
  • Security and/or server certifications.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities (Required)
  • Ability to act as a technical resource and participate in system and network projects, including backup knowledge.
  • Understanding and proficiency with SAN and NAS storage, LAN and WAN concepts, routing, cabling, VPNs, and ISP options and capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, LAN, and WAN for troubleshooting and resolving server issues.
  • Knowledge of firewalls, proxies, and databases to maintain network and user security.
  • Ability to create scripts using VBScript, PowerShell, Perl, PHP, and/or Python.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with customers, vendors, and team members.
  • Ability to multitask effectively and efficiently.
  • Operating system experience with Windows Server, Windows Desktop, and Ubuntu Linux.
  • Experience with Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Willingness to learn unfamiliar tools or skills as needed.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of maintaining security across workstations, servers, switches, firewalls, and related devices.
  • Knowledge of maintaining full system and procedure documentation.
  • Working knowledge of tools including Proxmox, Ceph.io, Debian, Cisco Global Protect, FlexLM, and Fog (Imaging).
