Job Title: Controller-Project Accountant

Job Overview

System One is seeking an experienced Construction Controller to oversee the financial operations of a growing construction organization. This role is responsible for managing all accounting functions, ensuring accurate job cost reporting, maintaining compliance with industry regulations, and supporting leadership with financial insights that guide operational and project-related decisions. The Construction Controller plays a critical role in ensuring the financial health of the company and supporting successful project execution.


Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all daily accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger management within a construction environment.

  • Prepare monthly financial statements, job cost reports, and variance analyses for active projects.

  • Monitor accounting transactions throughout the month and resolve discrepancies promptly.

  • Perform bank reconciliations, manage intercompany allocations, and maintain accurate cash account balances across business units or project teams.

  • Partner with Project Managers and leadership to review subcontracts, insurance requirements, change orders, lien waivers, and cost details.

  • Review and approve payment requests, pay applications, vendor invoices, and related documentation.

  • Lead budgeting and forecasting efforts, including project-level financial planning and companywide projections.

  • Provide timely financial reporting and respond to information requests from leadership.

  • Support the preparation of tax filings, external audits, and compliance with construction-specific regulations.

  • Participate in special projects and initiatives assigned by senior leadership.

  • Provide guidance and oversight to the accounting team and promote continuous improvement in financial processes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA preferred.

  • 3–5 years of experience in construction accounting or a related field; public accounting experience considered a plus.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, job cost accounting, and construction industry practices.

  • Proficiency with accounting software used in construction (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, Viewpoint, CMiC, or similar).

  • Advanced Excel skills and strong systems aptitude.

  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to project teams, field personnel, and leadership.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience and ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
