The Controller is a key member of the leadership team and is responsible for overseeing the organization’s financial operations. This role ensures strong financial management, accurate reporting, compliance with regulations, and long-term financial health. The Controller partners closely with leadership to support strategic planning, budgeting, and decision-making while promoting transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.
OVERVIEW OF THE CONTROLLER ROLE:
Financial Leadership & Planning
- Support leadership with financial planning, forecasting, and cash flow management
- Analyze revenues, expenses, and financial trends to support decision-making
- Ensure proper use of funds and compliance with donor and grant restrictions
Accounting Operations
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations and financial transactions
- Maintain accurate accrual-based accounting records
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal policies, and nonprofit regulations
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements for leadership and the Board
- Provide variance analysis, cash flow projections, and key financial metrics
- Track and report on donor-restricted and grant-funded activities
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with leadership
- Work with department managers to align budgets with program goals
- Monitor budget performance and recommend adjustments as needed
Audits, Grants & Compliance
- Lead external financial audits and manage audit relationships
- Maintain strong internal controls and financial policies
- Oversee federally funded grants, including budgeting, reporting, and compliance
- Ensure adherence to federal grant regulations (including Uniform Guidance)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE CONTROLLER:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- 4+ years in a Controller or Finance Director role
- 5+ additional years of progressive accounting experience
- Nonprofit accounting experience, including GAAP and grant compliance
- Experience with federal funding and 2 CFR 200 (Uniform Guidance)
- Prior supervisory experience preferred
- Strong skills in financial analysis, forecasting, and month-end close
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and accounting software (QuickBooks preferred)
- Experience with Salesforce, Concur, or Paylocity is a plus
