SupplyBank.Org is seeking an experienced, mission-driven finance leader to join our team as Controller. This role is ideal for an ambitious professional with 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting and finance, including significant leadership responsibility.
The Controller will play a critical role in ensuring the organization’s financial health and sustainability during a period of growth and innovation. The ideal candidate brings a strong track record of building and managing effective financial systems, supporting organizational strategy, and navigating complex funding environments—particularly within the nonprofit or public sector.
We are looking for someone deeply committed to advancing public assistance programs, community development, and systems-level change. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to work that directly supports hundreds of thousands of low-income children and families across California, helping to create pathways out of poverty.
The position will also include a significant role in the Oakport Campus (www.Oakport.Org). This project includes our new 120,000 square foot mural covered distribution center and a 160,000 square foot nonprofit campus with several amenities such as a BART Shuttle, childcare, rooftop garden, shared meeting spaces and the restoration of a one-mile stretch of the shoreline and Bay Trail. Part of the Controller’s responsibilities will include working with our external development team on the financing and other deliverables for the financial health of the campus.
This position includes three days in the office (Mondays, Wednesday and Thursdays) and two days voluntarily working from home (Tuesdays and Fridays). As the needs of the organization continue to change, this schedule will be reevaluated. Other in-person events and meetings with partners may occur throughout the year. Principle Duties and Responsibilities
The Controller oversees all core accounting and financial management functions, ensuring compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies. This role leads financial operations, reporting, budgeting, audit processes, and system improvements.
The Controller works closely with the Executive Director, Deputy Director, and the Board of Directors’ Finance and Audit Committees to support strategic decision-making and maintain strong financial oversight.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Operations
· Lead the monthly close process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
· Oversee journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting
· Manage accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and cash flow
· Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal controls
· Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, and systems
· Prepare internal and external financial reports, including funder reporting
· Monitor regulatory requirements and ensure proper accounting treatment
· Identify and mitigate financial risks, including fraud prevention
Audit & Compliance
· Lead the annual audit process and serve as primary liaison to external auditors
· Partner with the Board Audit Committee to ensure successful audit outcomes
· Ensure compliance with federal, state, and funder requirements
Budgeting & Financial Planning
· Lead the annual budgeting process across departments
· Provide budget-to-actual analysis and variance reporting
· Support leadership with financial modeling and forecasting
· Experience preparing and presenting financial reports to Boards of Directors to support governance, oversight, and strategic decision-making
Systems & Continuous Improvement
· Lead accounting system enhancements or migrations
· Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy
· Improve access to high-quality financial data for decision-making
· Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and enforcing strong internal controls to safeguard assets, ensure compliance, and support audit readiness
· Evaluate and implement tools to streamline workflows and reduce manual processes
Oakport Campus Financial Oversight
· Support financing and financial reporting for the Oakport Campus project
· Collaborate with external partners on complex financial transactions and deliverables
Qualifications
· 10+ years of accounting and finance experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector
· At least 7 years in a leadership or management role (flexible for exceptional candidates)
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
· Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial management
· Experience overseeing inventory management and procurement processes, including establishing controls, tracking systems, and vendor management practices to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and accountability
· Knowledge of contract compliance requirements, including reviewing agreements, monitoring deliverables, and ensuring adherence to federal, state, and other funder regulations
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities
· Demonstrated success in fast-paced, collaborative environments
· Understanding of economic development principles and experience managing capital asset accounts, including tracking construction-in-progress (CIP), capitalization, and financial reporting for large-scale development projects
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office, QuickBooks (or similar systems), Dropbox, and Asana
· Deep commitment to serving historically disenfranchised communities
Nice to Have
· Advanced degrees in accounting or finance is a plus - CPA preferred
· Experience with complex financial transactions
· Experience with accounting system migration
· Understanding of California state and local government agencies that assist low-income children and families

Compensation
The Controller will be a salaried position with a range of $120,000 to $130,000 with benefits commensurate with experience and performance. SupplyBank.Org offers health, vision, and dental benefits, transportation, student loan debt relief and a Simple IRA with a 3% gross company match.

Oakport Street Project - Oakport.org
Oakport will be a transformative 100-acre nonprofit campus that will foster a community of passionate, equity-focused, and socially minded agencies who partner with the community, and each other, to do impactful work. Open to the public, it will be the largest of its kind in the nation at 160,000 sq. ft. of office space and 60,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space. Local nonprofit organizations will be able to secure long-term location stability with fixed 60+ year lease options locked in at below-market rates. With Oakport, SupplyBank.org will be able to increase their capacity to store and distribute health, education, and emergency response supplies throughout the Bay Area and across the state to Californians who need support.
The project also includes modernizing the adjacent East Bay Municipal Utility District facilities, including their 24/7 emergency response center, warehouse and job training facilities. Of the total 100 acres, more than 80 will be revitalized park spaces, infrastructure improvements and nature based solutions to restore tidal wetlands, habitat, flood management and increase public enjoyment of the Bay Trail and parklands.
