Overview of the Controller
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial accounting, reporting, and internal controls for the church and its affiliated entities. This role manages business office operations, supervises key finance staff, and ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance, and sound fiscal management across the organization.
Key Responsibilities of the Controller
Financial Leadership & Reporting
- Develop and present the annual budget for two church campuses, the Campus Gift Shop, and the Music Academy; assist with preschool budget preparation.
- Prepare and present financial reports and analysis to the Finance Committee and Administrative Board as needed.
- Provide monthly financial reports to the Preschool Business Office Manager and Preschool Director.
- Complete financial sections of all United Methodist (UM) and North Georgia Conference (NGC) annual financial reports.
Accounting, Payroll & Compliance
- Reconcile all church and preschool bank accounts on a monthly basis.
- Ensure payroll for church and preschool is processed accurately and posted correctly.
- Ensure all receipts are recorded timely and accurately in both the church management system and general ledger.
- Ensure all bills are paid timely and properly recorded in the general ledger.
- File monthly sales tax reports for the campus gift shop.
Fund & Entity Oversight
- Work with the Endowment & Memorials Committee to oversee and properly account for all endowment funds.
- Summarize and post monthly QuickBooks transactions for the Music Academy into Shelby.
- Provide accounting guidance and support to the Pastoral Counseling Center.
Staff Supervision & Collaboration
- Oversee and support the Contribution Coordinator and Accounts Payable/Payroll Coordinator.
- Provide guidance and assistance to the Business Office Managers for the Preschool and Pastoral Counseling Center.
- Prepare and provide Check Control Sheets twice weekly for the Contribution Coordinator.
External Relationships & Audit Support
- Maintain banking relationships with all financial institutions.
- Work with insurance brokers to ensure general and liability insurance coverage is maintained and updated annually.
- Coordinate with an independent CPA firm to provide annual financial data and support the annual review or audit process.
Required Education & Experience for the Controller
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
- Minimum of 3 years of managerial experience in a medium‑sized nonprofit organization.
- Experience developing and maintaining financial policies and internal controls.
- Proven experience working with external CPA firms, auditors, banks, and financial institutions.
Required Skills & Knowledge for the Controller
- Advanced knowledge of general accounting principles, nonprofit and fund accounting, budgeting, payroll, and sales tax regulations.
- Advanced Excel proficiency required.
- Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
- High level of integrity, attention to detail, and commitment to financial stewardship.
