CapSpecialty is seeking a Construction Underwriter who is responsible for underwriting, building, and nurturing a book of casualty brokerage business through a dedicated wholesale distribution force, while also delivering strong underwriting analysis and superior customer service to the Specialty Casualty brokerage team. The risks and exposures the Underwriter evaluates require complex critical thinking approaches to address differing circumstances. The Construction Underwriter demonstrates underwriting skills and the ability to develop a knowledge of appetite, rates, forms, pricing structures, terms, and conditions.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to strategy and execute a business plan to work with appointed agents to write E&S business on behalf of CapSpecialty.
  • Make suggestions regarding the selection and termination of your agents.
  • Help meet all underwriting profit expectations as agreed upon in annual budget.
  • Establish excellent and professional working relationships with agents.
  • Provide feedback to management on market conditions, competitor info, and broker movements through discussions with agents.
  • Ensure efficiency by reviewing processes and procedures, making suggestions for improvements, and helping to implement changes as necessary.
  • Work closely with operations team to ensure our service standards are achieved.
  • Work with all other departments to ensure financial integrity and customer satisfaction.

Core Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact well with internal and external resources at all levels.
  • Completion or continuing work towards industry certifications (CPCU, CRIS, etc.) preferred.
  • General familiarity with ISO Commercial General Liability and XS Liability policy forms and endorsements, particularly for the construction industry.  Experience underwriting residential and commercial contractors and construction risks in the middle market space is preferred.  Familiarity with project policies, including, but not limited to owner's interest and wrap coverage offerings.
  • Working knowledge of ISO GL rating and general loss rating.
  • Preferred candidate will have relationships within the wholesale marketplace.
  • Ability to develop familiarity with a wide variety of businesses and organizations, the services they provide, as well as the regulatory, legislative, legal and economic factors that affect them.
  • Must be skilled in using personal computers, the internet and multiple software programs.  Must have working knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of Casualty underwriting experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of excess and surplus insurance on a nationwide basis is a must.

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • May be required to lift up to 15 lbs. at times.
  • Some business travel may be required.
