ABOUT THE POSITION: Spokane Valley is seeking a highly qualified and enthusiastic employee to serve our city as a regular, full-time Communications Specialistin our Communications Division. The successful candidate will work with the city’s Communications Manager to support the city’s goal of providing regular, timely, clear and accurate information to inform and engage the community and create opportunities to increase community participation and input to inform city decision-making.

SELECTED EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Write, edit and proofread content for a variety of applications, including website, social media, e-newsletters, posters, flyers, brochures, advertisements, annual reports, maps, forms, signage, video, etc., for various city initiatives, programs, projects and branded campaigns to further city priorities and initiatives. Ensure accurate and consist use of the city’s brand including applications, as provided in the Brand Standards Guide; Synthesize technical or industry specific content into easily understandable messaging. Ensure that work products are clear, concise and effectively convey the intended messages and information. Curate graphics and post content for the city's social media accounts; monitor and respond to community member comments and questions. Ensure the city website is accurate, highly functional and professional.

 

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: (A) Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, English or a closely related field; and (B) Minimum of three (3) years previous professional experience desired; or (C) An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge and expertise in a variety of traditional and non-traditional communications platforms including, but not limited to print, web, social media, graphic design, photography, video, etc. Expertise with all forms of social media platforms and knowledge of best practices. Expertise in conducting, analyzing and evaluating data collection. Knowledge of ADA laws, principles and best practices related to communications. High-level attention to detail. Effectively solve problems and resolve conflicts. Be innovative and create and develop new and unique ideas. Streamline processes to increase production and efficiency. Multi-task and meet deadlines. Work independently and as part of a team. Establish rapport with people easily and maintain effective working relationships with city staff, elected officials and the public. Knowledge, ability and skill in the principles and practices of excellent customer service. Skill in the use of industry-related software including but not limited to MS Office software, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. Experience with Civic Plus, GovDelivery, Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud Suite applications preferred. Experience with HTML preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid State driver's license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment. Successful completion of a background check, including a criminal check, is a requirement of employment at Spokane Valley. 

SALARY:  Full salary range is $6,361 - $9,630 per month (Grade 15). Hiring salary DOQ and includes an excellent benefit package. This is a represented, FLSA exempt position, in the Communications Division.

BENEFITS: Health benefits are provided through the Association of Washington Cities Employee Benefit Trust. The City currently provides medical, dental, life, long term disability, vision, health reimbursement account contributions and Employee Assistance benefits. Holiday, vacation, and other paid leave are provided. The required retirement system of the City is Washington Public Employee’s Retirement System (PERS) which requires an employee contribution. The City does not participate in Social Security. However, the City has adopted a MissionSquare(A) Social Security substitute plan with the same contribution rates as FICA.
