The Specialty Pharmacist is responsible for the clinical management, dispensing, and coordination of care for patients receiving specialty medications. This role ensures safe, effective, and cost-efficient medication use while optimizing patient outcomes through collaboration with providers, payers, and interdisciplinary care teams. The Specialty Pharmacist supports patients with complex, chronic, or rare conditions requiring high-touch clinical oversight and medication access support.


Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Patient Management

  • Provide comprehensive medication therapy management for patients receiving specialty medications
  • Assess patient appropriateness for therapy, including indication, dosing, contraindications, and monitoring parameters
  • Educate patients and caregivers on medication use, administration, side effects, and adherence strategies
  • Monitor therapy outcomes, adverse events, and adherence; intervene as needed to optimize care
  • Collaborate with prescribers to adjust therapy based on clinical response and evidence-based guidelines

Operational Excellence

  • Ensure accurate and compliant dispensing of specialty medications
  • Maintain documentation in accordance with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards
  • Support specialty pharmacy accreditation requirements (e.g., URAC, ACHC)
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and performance metrics tracking

Work Environment

  • Practice setting may include specialty pharmacy or ambulatory clinic
  • May require occasional evening or weekend coverage based on operational needs

Qualifications:

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • PharmD or equivalent education and hospital or ambulatory training / experience required, based on practice area of the position.
  • PGY2 residency or equivalent experience required.
  • PGY 2 residency training is preferred. Two to four years-experience in a relevant practice area will be considered equivalent to each year of residency training.
  • Board certification is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with medical, nursing, and pharmacy staff, pharmacy residents, and students is required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of general hospital and outpatient clinic operations.
  • Ability to integrate clinical services, and educational activities is required.

Motor Vehicle Operator Designation: Employees in this position: Will operate vehicles for an assigned business purpose as a non-frequent driver.

 

Licensure/Certification/Registration:: Registered pharmacist in Florida or eligible for same.

 

Additional Requirement: As a condition of employment within the Pharmacy Services Department of Shands Hospital all employees must be accessible by telephone. This requires each employee to provide a valid telephone number to the department Staff Assistant, in order for the department to reach them in the event of hospital need and/or emergency.
