About the Opportunity

This is a high-impact leadership role within a large, mission‑driven nonprofit organization supporting a multi‑entity network with more than $600M in consolidated operations and 200+ programs. The CFO serves as the strategic and operational #2 to the CFO with full visibility and influence across the organization’s financial ecosystem.

This is a rare opportunity to shape complex financial operations, lead a high‑performing team, and directly contribute to work that impacts children, families, and adults across large‑scale community programs.

Benefits Include:

  • 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for the employee
  • 403(b) retirement plan with 5.25% employer match after 2 years (requires 3% employee contribution)
  • Accident, life, and disability insurance
  • Relocation support available for the right candidate

Why This Role Is Exceptional

  • Direct partnership with the CFO, regular interaction with board, affiliate presidents, auditors, and key leaders.
  • Financial leadership across a large, multi‑entity, grant‑funded environment.
  • Work that directly supports community-serving programs and the greater good.
  • Opportunity to expand scope as the organization grows and potentially step in when the CFO is unavailable.
  • Lead improvements in processes, reporting, treasury, and team development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead financial reporting, analysis, and strategic financial support for affiliate presidents.
  • Ensure reporting meets operational needs and all grant, regulatory, and compliance requirements.
  • Maintain audit readiness, oversee external reviews, and present financials as needed.
  • Manage 5 direct reports and a total team of approximately 15 within a 40-person finance department.
  • Oversee treasury, banking, payables, recordkeeping, and internal controls.
  • Develop staff, manage performance, and resolve team-related challenges effectively.
  • Serve as the full stand‑in for the CFO when needed.
  • Represent the finance function to the board, auditors, and oversight bodies.
  • Communicate complex financial information clearly to non‑finance leaders.
  • Write, update, and implement financial policies, SOPs, and protocols.
  • Drive accountability around deadlines, deliverables, and accuracy.
  • Roll up sleeves and engage in hands-on work when necessary.

Required Qualifications

  • Active CPA license (mandatory)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • Senior financial leadership experience in:
    • complex, multi‑entity, highly regulated environments
    • nonprofit experience strongly preferred, but adaptable for-profit backgrounds may be considered
  • Experience managing teams and building high-performance cultures
  • Strong presentation ability, including board-facing or equivalent stakeholder engagement
  • Ability to operate both strategically and “in the weeds”

Preferred Experience

  • Grants and contracts management
  • Medicaid or government-funded program experience
  • International operations exposure
  • Experience navigating fast-paced, high-volume environments

Disqualifiers

  • Candidates who have only operated at a high, oversight-only level for extended periods
  • Lack of hands-on experience or unwillingness to dive into detailed work
