SUMMARY:
American Thermal Instruments, a leader in the thermal innovation, is looking for a Chemist II to research and develop new materials, formulations, and processes for scale-up into the company product line. Chemist II will lead projects with minimum guidance from senior chemists and managers to improve and refine developmental formulations for commercialization and optimize production processes. Chemist II will conduct tests on thermal solutions and/or their components, which includes materials R&D and thermal property characterizations. This person should enjoy working in a smaller, fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Research, develop, and analyze new thermal monitoring products. Maintain and improve existing products.
- Formulate thermally sensitive inks and coatings for use in the thermal monitoring products utilizing procured materials and unique materials designed at ATI.
- Develop new formulations using various mixing, blending, and polymerization techniques.
- Identify, procure, and evaluate raw materials from manufacturers and/or suppliers.
- Scale-up processes on in-house equipment or at external printing partners.
- Leverage technical knowledge to be a trusted resource internally for production, sales, and marketing in support of scale-up, quality control, application testing and problem solving, as part of cross functional teams.
- Be a resource externally for customers in product development, applications, and problem solving.
- Utilize, monitor, and maintain laboratory equipment, and conduct minor trouble shooting.
- Manage laboratory documentation (e.g., lab notebooks, work instructions, quality forms, technical data sheet).
- Maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment.
- Stay current in technical areas by reviewing patent and technical literature.
- Effectively communicate project activities through reports and presentations that provide clear, concise results and conclusions.

TO BE SUCCESSFUL YOU WILL HAVE THE FOLLOWING:
- BS degree in Chemistry, Material Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or other science related field, 3 or more years’ experience.
or
- Master degree in Chemistry, Material Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or other science related field, plus 1 or more years’ experience.
- Basic wet chemistry experience; must have superior hands-on skills.
- Experience either using or interpreting results from analytical equipment such as GC, DSC, UV-Vis, FTIR, TGA, pH meters, viscometer, moisture balance, and particle size analyzer.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety best practices, including SDS cataloging, proper PPE, material storage, material disposal, inventory, and maintenance of related equipment.
- Experience with microscopic and/or general laboratory failure analysis.
- Effective written and oral communication skills, keen attention to detail.
- Organizational skills: ability to prioritize job duties and remain proactive with a fluctuating workload.
DESIRED SKILLS IN ONE OR MORE OF THESE AREAS
- Knowledge of formulation and uses of adhesives, inks, and coatings.
- Experience sourcing adhesives, adhesive tapes, paper, coatings, and laminates to construct printed products such as labels.
- Application of inks, adhesives, and coatings by printing processes such as flexography, gravure, and inkjet.
- Knowledge in microencapsulation processes and chemistries such as gelatin coacervation, melamine based, and others.
- Ability to use statistical methods to analyze experimental data.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working conditions are normal for a laboratory environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, or use motor skills for extended periods. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Working in this environment may require the use of safety equipment such as safety glasses and safety shoes. Some mandatory overtime may be required.
