This is a staff level Chemist position responsible for preparation and analysis of water, sediment and biota samples for the determination of a variety of inorganic parameters while ensuring that requirements for turnaround time and productivity are met.  The Chemist 3 will provide assistance in other laboratory analyses when needed.  The Chemist 3 must follow written testing procedures and verbal instructions, prepare samples through digestion techniques, monitor standards and quality control samples, calibrate instrumentation, perform routine instrument maintenance and troubleshoot when needed. The Chemist 3 must maintain organized and complete analytical documentation, enter data into the laboratory information management system (LIMS), and perform general housekeeping.  

The Chemist 3 must have significant experience with quality control techniques used in environmental laboratories and have functional knowledge of the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP).  The Chemist 3 must be qualified as a NELAP Inorganics Laboratory Analyst and successfully complete initial and ongoing demonstrations of capability.  

The candidate must be familiar with the quality control requirements of a certified environmental laboratory and with the production aspects of automated laboratory instruments.

This position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies.  Work requires some lifting (up to 40 pounds), prolonged standing, repetitive bending and reaching, periodic exposure to refrigerated conditions to retrieve samples, and work is performed in a laboratory where employees routinely use numerous chemical compounds.

HIRING RANGE: $56,082.52- $69,619.68

Employment Guidelines: 

Chemist 3: Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science or a closely related field; and 2+ years of qualifying environmental laboratory experience that demonstrates measurable career progression. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

License(s) / Certification(s): 

Valid State of Florida Driver's License required.

Physical Requirements/ Working Environment:

Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during, and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
