The Charge Posting Specialist is responsible for the audit and review of patient charges and billing in conjunction with the Business Office and Accounting departments. Serves as a resource for clinical information regarding billing. Assists the chart auditor in providing documentation for re-submission of insurance. Is responsible for ensuring the medical record and EMR is complete, based on organizational guidelines and standards.
Essential Functions
- Ensures precise billing for assigned departments through audit, research, and communication. Verifies accuracy of billing statements submitted by clinical personnel. Verifies charges submitted to the patient and insurance company. Ensures accuracy of the Discharge Acuity Level Record, as evidenced by patient account review. Review Discharge Acuity Level Record for completeness as evidenced by chart review. Enters billing charges into the computer based on the Discharge Acuity Record and EMR. Recommends adjustments in the billing process to ensure accuracy.
- Reviews, analyzes, and ensures accurate documentation. Assembles medical record according to applicable policies, procedures and guidelines. Analyzes medical record for documentation deficiencies as evidenced by chart review.
- Maintains database and provides timely and accurate reports and correspondence regarding completion of medical records. Investigate and analyze shift reports and reconciliation to ensure all charts are complete and accurate. Communicate with physicians, other ED providers, Clinicians, and Charge Nurses to resolve missing documentation. Responsible for maintaining strict patient confidentiality in relation to any patient health information as per policy.
- Provides assistance to other staff members and may provide training as necessary. Performs a variety of duties related to departmental administration including data entry, documentation auditing, information filing, document preparation, office equipment maintenance, and supply procurement. All functions are performed according to departmental standards as demonstrated by observation, feedback, documentation and audit.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Associate's Degree - Preferred
- High School Diploma or GED - Required
- 2 years experience in Physician Office, Health Information, Patient Accounting, or Unit Secretary field, or completion of formal coding education - Required
- 4 years experience in clerical/ coding/accounting related duties - Preferred
- Other Completion of other coding training program to include medical terminology, Basic ICD diagnostic/procedural and Basic CPT coding. - Preferred
