Recovery Coach / Peer Support Specialist

Newaygo County Mental Health is seeking a full‑time Recovery Coach/Peer Support Specialist to join our Adult Services Team. This role provides community‑based and office‑based support to individuals with co‑occurring mental health and substance use disorders, helping them build recovery capital, strengthen natural supports, and engage meaningfully in the community.

Position Summary

The Recovery Coach uses their own lived experience with substance use recovery and co‑occurring challenges to support, mentor, and empower individuals as they work toward obtaining or maintaining recovery. This position emphasizes:

·         Increasing community involvement and pro‑social activities

·         Building natural supports and social connections

·         Supporting individuals in navigating treatment, recovery resources, and community systems

·         Encouraging hope, resilience, and self‑determination

The Recovery Coach will work closely with clinicians, case managers, and community partners to promote engagement, reduce barriers, and support long‑term recovery.

Key Responsibilities

·         Provide peer‑based support, mentorship, and encouragement through face‑to‑face meetings in the community and office settings

·         Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating healthy recovery practices

·         Assist individuals in identifying strengths, goals, and recovery pathways

·         Support engagement with treatment, community resources, and pro‑social activities

·         Facilitate connections to recovery meetings, support groups, and community organizations

·         Share one’s own recovery story appropriately to inspire hope and demonstrate possibility

·         Collaborate with the Adult Services Team and external partners to coordinate care

·         Maintain accurate documentation within the electronic health record

Qualifications

·         Must meet the requirements to serve as a Peer Support Specialist, including lived experience with substance use recovery

·         Certified Recovery Coach credential preferred

·         Strong recovery capital, including stability in personal recovery and the ability to model healthy coping and decision‑making

·         Experience supporting individuals with co‑occurring mental health and substance use disorders preferred

·         Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team

·         Comfort with community‑based work and building relationships with local organizations

·         Basic computer skills and ability to use an electronic clinical record

·         Strong communication, boundaries, and professionalism

Compensation & Benefits

·         Salary range: $40,792 – $50,000 annually, based on experience
