Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for cleaning, decontamination, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation and reusable supplies. This role ensures all surgical instruments and supplies are properly prepared for emergent and routine cases while adhering to safety, infection control, and inventory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Assemble, wrap, and inspect surgical instrument sets to ensure cleanliness and proper function.
- Operate sterilization equipment, including autoclaves and sonic cleaners, in compliance with safety standards.
- Retrieve, deliver, and re-sterilize instruments and supplies as required.
- Maintain accurate sterilization records and perform routine inventory checks to ensure supply availability.
- Prepare and maintain case carts and coordinate with OR staff to meet surgical case needs.
- Monitor and report equipment or supply shortages, ensuring inventory control practices (FIFO) are followed.
- Participate in departmental cleaning, decontamination, and staff training as assigned.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Technician certification from either the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).
- Minimum 6 months of related experience in sterile processing or surgical services.
- Knowledge of sterilization practices, sanitation standards, and surgical instrumentation.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, maintain records, and work effectively under pressure.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills with a focus on customer service.
- Basic computer literacy and ability to perform simple math.
