  1. DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES

The primary purpose of this position is to provide all choir direction and musical accompaniment as necessary to support the various Catholic programs at Hill Air Force Base Legacy Chapel. 

1.1. BASIC SERVICES/QUALIFICATIONS.

This position shall be accomplished on a weekly basis as follows: weekly services, weekly rehearsals, special services, and special rehearsals (authorized by the Wing Chaplain or Catholic chaplain). This position shall be accomplished on a weekly basis as follows:  Not to Exceed (NTE) 104 weekend masses, NTE 18 Holy Days.  Performances and rehearsals shall take place at the Main Chapel (Bldg. 475) or Chapel Annex (Bldg. 445).  All other locations shall be by approval of the Wing Chaplain and/or Catholic Chaplain.  The individual should be present at least 15 minutes prior to play for performances and will play for five to ten minutes of prelude music and five minutes of postlude music.  These and any additional position requirements shall be accomplished as necessary, in accordance with the provisions below.

1.2. QUALIFICATIONS.

Knowledge:  A minimum of three years’ experience in the field with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. The individual must have a minimum of three years’ experience in selecting and directing Catholic Parish music that reflects knowledge and sensitivity towards a Catholic understanding of music selection and Catholic Mass requirements. 

Education:  A bachelor’s degree in music is preferred but not required.  Three years’ experience can be substituted for education. Candidate must be able to provide piano, digital organ and keyboard accompanist capability, and have a minimum of two years of church accompanist work or equivalent combination of musician experience.

Experience: Three years’ specialized experience equivalent that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. The individual must have experience in selecting, singing and directing Catholic Parish music that reflects knowledge and sensitivity towards a Catholic understanding of music selection. 

1.3. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES.  The duties include but are not limited to the following: 

1.3.1. Be present to provide vocal, musical accompaniment, choir direction and lead worship songs for all weekly choir practices and all Catholic Masses.  Also, must be present for special services (i.e., penance services, memorial services, Holy Days and confirmation celebrations) and for special liturgical seasons (i.e., Christmas, Holy Week, and Easter).

1.3.2. Return the music area to its prior condition at the completion of each Mass

1.3.3. Coordinate all music selections with the Catholic Priest through weekly contact and attend monthly Parish Council meetings.

1.3.4. Coordinate all special services to include memorial services, holy days, revivals, music services, etc.

1.3.5. Select and coordinate with the Catholic Priest music for Holy Day or special services and weekly or special rehearsals.

1.3.6. Conduct and coordinate with the Catholic Priest special seasonal musical celebrations including Christmas and Easter Cantatas, as scheduled.

1.3.7. Assist in the research and organization of chapel selections in order to be familiar with what music is on hand.

1.3.9. Secure a suitable replacement when necessary, who will meet all of the requirements as set forth in this performance work statement (PWS).  The Catholic Priest will be notified as soon as possible when the musician is unavailable and suitable replacement is necessary during times of sickness, vacation, etc.  Musician is responsible for payment to substitute musicians.

1.3.10. Give the chapel staff a two-week notice of any extended period of absence. Extended period of absence is defined as an absence for more than three days. The musician will provide a substitute to perform services in their absence. This substitute must be of equal or greater capability than musician and approved by the approving official. Musician will develop a documented method of reimbursement for any substitutes.

1.3.11. Provide all labor and transportation necessary to perform these duties.

1.3.12. Plan the year’s music and calendar; coordinate with the Catholic Priest for Holy Day services, and any special services and rehearsals.

1.3.13. Ensure that newly acquired music is properly cataloged, identified, and filed.

1.3.14. Ensure government procured musical instruments are adequately protected from harm and misuse. Notify Chapel staff when instruments require repair, replacement or tuning.

This is a part-time position with compensation based on budget and the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications..
