Capital Projects Accounting Manager

Position Overview of Capital Projects Accounting Manager:

We are seeking a Capital Projects Accounting Manager to lead project accounting and fixed asset activities for a growing energy infrastructure organization. This role will oversee the accounting and reporting of capital projects from initial authorization through asset capitalization and lifecycle management.

Reporting to the VP of FP&A, the Capital Projects Accounting Manager will partner closely with operations, engineering, and project management teams to ensure accurate capital tracking, strong internal controls, and efficient financial processes. This position will also play a key role in building and standardizing procedures as the company continues to expand.

Key Responsibilities:

Capital Projects & Project Accounting:

• Oversee the accounting and financial management of capital projects from project setup through completion and asset placement in service.

• Manage the Authorization for Expenditure (AFE) process, including project setup, approvals, workflow administration, and monitoring of project budgets.

• Ensure accurate tracking and reporting of capital expenditures across multiple projects and business units.

• Partner with project managers and operations teams to provide financial insight into project performance, forecasting, and cost control.

• Support capital forecasting and reporting to senior leadership.

Fixed Asset Accounting:

• Oversee the full lifecycle of fixed assets, including asset additions, transfers, capitalization, depreciation, and retirements.

• Manage asset rollforwards and reconciliation of fixed asset subledgers to the general ledger.

• Ensure compliance with accounting policies related to capitalization and asset management.

Financial Reporting & Month-End Close:

• Lead month-end close processes related to capital projects and fixed assets, including journal entries, reconciliations, and reporting.

• Prepare and review capital reporting packages for finance leadership.

• Maintain strong documentation and internal controls around capital accounting activities.

Leadership & Process Improvement

• Lead and develop a combined project accounting and fixed asset accounting team.

• Establish and standardize policies, procedures, and workflows related to capital project accounting.

• Drive process improvements and system efficiencies within the capital accounting function.

• Ensure adherence to internal delegation of authority and approval policies related to capital expenditures.

Qualifications of Capital Projects Accounting Manager:

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

• 8+ years of accounting experience with a focus on capital projects, project accounting, or fixed asset accounting.

• 5+ years of leadership or supervisory experience.

• Strong experience with capital project tracking, project setup, and AFE processes.

• Expertise in fixed asset accounting including asset capitalization, depreciation, and retirements.

• Experience with capital project reporting, forecasting, and month-end close processes.

• ERP system experience such as Oracle or similar financial systems.

• Ability to partner cross-functionally with operations, engineering, and finance teams.

Preferred

• Experience in energy, oil & gas, utilities, engineering, or infrastructure-based organizations.

• Experience in asset-heavy industries with large capital project portfolios.

Leadership Responsibilities

• Supervise and mentor a team of project and fixed asset accountants.

• Guide the team through process improvements and organizational growth.

• Ensure strong communication and collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Work Environment

• Hybrid schedule with in-office presence Monday–Wednesday and remote work Thursday–Friday.
