Biological Engineer

 

The LASSO-II contract is actively seeking a highly motivated entry-level Biological Engineer for employment at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, FL. This position would support multiple projects including physical-chemical and biological life support systems, in-situ resource utilization, and operation and design of bioreactors.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • BS or MS in Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or similar disciplines
  • 0-2 years of experience
  • Chemistry/Biology/Biochemistry wet laboratory experience.
  • General knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices of biological, environmental or chemical engineering and their application in characterizing physical-chemical and biological processes.
  • Experience with Microsoft, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.
  • Proficient in developing control algorithms for instrumentation and automation of biological systems (e.g. dataloggers and PC controlled systems)
  • Familiarity with laboratory best practices and experience working as a bench engineer/biological scientist
  • Experience with rapid prototyping utilizing 3D printers, hand tools and shop equipment

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in design, construction, and operation of complex test rigs for various chemistry and biology research projects, specifically related to bioreactor and controlled agricultural systems
  • Setup, calibration, and monitoring of environmental monitoring sensors including pH, dissolved oxygen, soil moisture, electrical conductivity, relative humidity, temperature, CO2 concentration, etc.
  • Collection, analysis, and statistical interpretation of data
  • Desired proficiency in software such as Python, SolidWorks, Arduino, ImageJ, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Proficient and familiarity in shop power tools, DC voltage circuitry, and data acquisition and management via dataloggers
  • Able to work in multi-disciplined teams and on multiple projects
  • Maintain a lab inventory and submit purchase orders for new equipment
  • Ensure laboratory compliance with safety, quality assurance, and other company policies
  • Perform other duties as assigned
