Summary/Objective

A AWS Certified Welding Inspector is

responsible for thoroughly inspecting welds and materials during the manufacturing process, ensuring they meet industry standards and comply with relevant welding codes and specifications by conducting visual assessments, dimensional checks, and non-destructive testing, documenting findings, and communicating any defects or non-conformances to relevant stakeholders to maintain quality control on welding projects.

Essential Functions:

  • **Pre-weld inspection:

**Reviewing welding procedures, material specifications, and joint preparations to ensure compliance with project requirements.

  • **Weld inspection:

**Visually examining completed welds for defects like cracks, porosity, undercut, and improper fusion using various inspection techniques (visual, magnetic particle, dye penetrant, ultrasonic).

  • **Dimensional checks:

**Verifying weld dimensions and tolerances using measuring tools.

  • **Non-destructive testing (NDT)

**Overseeing and interpreting NDT results performed by qualified technicians to identify internal defects.

  • **Documentation:

**Accurately recording inspection findings, including detailed reports with photos, measurements, and any non-conformances identified.

  • **Communication:

**Clearly communicating inspection results to welders, engineers, project managers, and quality control personnel.

  • **Corrective action:

**Identifying and reporting potential issues, suggesting corrective actions to address defects, and ensuring necessary repairs are completed.

  • **Qualification of welders and welding procedures:

**Assisting in the qualification process for welding procedures and welders by evaluating their performance against established standards.

  • **Code compliance:

**Staying updated on relevant welding codes and standards (e.g., AWS, ASME) to ensure all work adheres to regulations.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • **Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification:

**Holding a valid CWI certification from a recognized organization like the American Welding Society (AWS).

  • **Technical knowledge:

**Thorough understanding of welding processes, metallurgy, weld joint design, and inspection techniques.

  • **Visual acuity:

**Excellent eyesight for detailed visual inspections.

  • **Analytical skills:

**Ability to interpret inspection data and identify potential issues.

  • **Problem-solving skills:

**Identifying root causes of defects and proposing solutions

  • **Communication skills:

**Clear and concise communication to effectively convey inspection findings to stakeholders.

  • **Attention to detail:

**High level of precision in recording inspection data and documenting non-conformances.

Work Environment:

CWI inspectors typically work in industrial settings like manufacturing plants, fabrication shops, construction sites, or on offshore platforms, often requiring exposure to various weather conditions and potentially hazardous environments.
