Missionor Goal of Unit:  Ourmission is to provide unparalleled patient care, educate and train emergingleaders in emergency medicine and set a national standard for quality andsafety metrics by responding to the changing needs of emergency healthcarethrough innovative research and systems development.

ChiefPurpose of this position:  We areseeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our dynamic academicemergency medicine team as a Physician Informaticist. We are seeking afull-time candidate who will work 75% of their time clinically and 25%dedicated to clinical informaticist duties. The clinical time will be splitbetween our downtown adult ED and our free-standing ED at New Kent. Thecandidate will contribute to our mission of providing exceptionalpatient care, innovative research, and high-quality education in emergencymedicine. Our Emergency MedicinePhysician Informaticist would bridge clinical practice and technology byanalyzing patient data, optimizing workflows, and implementing IT systems toimprove patient care, safety, and efficiency in the Emergency Department.  This role requires a strong understanding ofboth clinical operations and information systems to ensure technologyeffectively supports evidence-based decision-making and enhances the overallpatient experience.
The faculty member will work primarily at the VCU MedicalCenter (Richmond VA), which is a largely underserved, Level 1 adult andpediatric Trauma Center and tertiary referral center seeing over 100,000patients per year. The department is nationally recognized for innovativemanagement of chest pain, stroke, major trauma, and high acuity medical cases.In addition, the Virginia Poison Center is a division component of thisdepartment. The VCU Department of Emergency Medicine also provides coverage atother VCU Health facilities including a free-standing Emergency Departmentserving the rural patient community of New Kent, Virginia, which sees over15,000 patients per year and community hospitals in Tappahannock, Virginia andSouth Hill, Virginia which see 20,000 patients per year and 25,000 patients peryear, respectively.

VirginiaCommonwealth University Department of Emergency Medicine houses an EmergencyMedicine 3-year residency program.  Wealso partner with the Air Force and train their residents as well.  We are one of only 12 programs to house acombined Emergency Medicine-Internal Medicine residency program.  Finally, the Department offers fellowshipprograms in Administration, Emergency Medical Service, Medical Education,Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Clinical Toxicology, Ultrasound, and UltrasoundResuscitation.

Facultymay be recruited at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Professorcommensurate with experience.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Clinical - Provide excellent clinical care by demonstrating proficiency in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of a wide range of acute medical and traumatic conditions. Provide efficient, high quality patient care that reflects current professional practice norms and skills and is consistent with accepted utilization guidelines.
  • Education - Participate actively in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, and other learners, providing didactic lectures, bedside teaching, and simulation-based training.
  • Research - Engage in impactful research and scholarly activities, generating knowledge and contributing to advancements in emergency medicine. Support the department’s research initiatives.
  • Quality/Safety - Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes, participate in quality improvement initiatives and promote patient safety and satisfaction.
  • Administrative – Serve as the Department’s expert on matters related to clinical informatics, Epic functionality for an ED practice, telehealth, and adoption of AI tools in the clinical environment. Engage with health system IT leadership on new IT projects/initiatives that impact Emergency Care to ensure improvement with departmental workflows and minimization of disruptions to clinical practice. Educate faculty, APPs, residents and other team members about newly adopted technologies as they roll out. Contribute to administrative and leadership responsibilities within the department, fostering a positive work environment and supporting the growth of emergency medicine services.

RequiredQualifications: 

  • Unrestricted Virginia Medical license or ability to qualify for one
  • Board Certified/Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine
  • Board Certified in Clinical Informatics
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in clinical care, education, and research within the field of Emergency Medicine and health informatics.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to effectively work with key internal and external stakeholders at the regional and state levels who are involved with EMS and public health.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
