Job Summary:
JOB SUMMARY
Provides services to patients and athletes who have impairments, functional limitations or changes in physical function and health status as a result of injury, illness or other causes with occasional guidance. Actively collaborates with the health care/educational team which consists of the Director of Sports Medicine, team physicians, Vanderbilt University Medical Center specialists, athletic trainers and physical therapists to meet patient care, outcomes and system treatment, rehabilitation care to athletes using modalities, personnel, equipment and supply resources.

Vanderbilt Health is seeking a BOC‑certified Athletic Trainer (PRN) to support our Sports Medicine Department, providing on‑site athletic training services for partnered programs including the Nashville Predators Hockey Camps, Nashville Soccer Club Academy, Vanderbilt Recreation & Wellness, Metro Nashville Public Schools, and Wilson County Schools.
This PRN Athletic Trainer role is ideal for a board‑certified professional who enjoys working in dynamic sports environments, supporting injury prevention, evaluation, emergency care, and return‑to‑play decisions in collaboration with physicians and sports medicine teams.
About the Role: PRN Athletic Trainer – Sports Medicine
As a PRN Athletic Trainer, you will provide athletic training coverage across a variety of competitive and recreational sports settings.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Provide on‑site athletic training services during scheduled practices, competitions, and sports events
+ Perform injury prevention, evaluation, acute care, treatment, and rehabilitation for athletes
+ Communicate effectively with coaches, athletes, physicians, and medical staff regarding care plans and return‑to‑play decisions
+ Maintain accurate clinical documentation and follow Vanderbilt Health policies and protocols
+ Ensure compliance with NATA standards, BOC guidelines, and state regulations
Required Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training or related field (required)
+ BOC Certification (Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers), active and in good standing
+ Licensed or eligible for licensure as an Athletic Trainer in the State of Tennessee
+ Current CPR certification (BLS preferred)
+ Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer
+ Ability to work independently in fast‑paced sports medicine environments
+ Strong communication, organization, and clinical decision‑making skills

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Collaborates in establishing athletic training and sports medicine services, plan of care; then coordinates and implements care delivery while anticipating patient/athlete care needs across the continuum.
• Analyzes comprehensive information pertinent to the patient's/athlete's care and management to determine patient/athlete functional capabilities within defined activity levels.
• Continually utilizes Athletic Training skills and resources to evaluate patient's/athlete's functional capabilities towards optimal, safe participation, and applies appropriate interventions to ensure effective outcomes.
• Employs strategies to promote health and a safe and healthy environment.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES
• Patient Education (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency in providing patient education in practical applications of moderate difficulty.
• Athletic Training (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate athletic training in practical applications of moderate difficulty.
• Treatment Implementation (Novice): Demonstrates proficiency in providing treatment consistent with physician prescription and established plan of care. Able to modify treatment plan as needed to demonstrate provision of skilled therapy services including progression of treatment throughout course of care, and revision of treatment interventions of goals not met. May supervise and direct certified athletic trainers (PT only), physical therapist / occupational therapist assistants, technicians and volunteers and students. Selects and follows correct protocol for care and utilize evidence based treatments. Has completed at least one year of clinical experience in treatment implementation.
• Patient Evaluation (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate the ability to conduct a patient evaluation in practical applications of moderate difficulty. Capable of effectively assessing the relative merits of alternative products or services.
• Patient Documentation (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate patient documentation in practical applications of moderate difficulty. Generally works under the direction of others while accomplishing assignments.
