About the Medical Society and the Committee for Physician Health (CPH)
The Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY), a statewide public health and advocacy organization for doctors within the state. The Committee for Physician Health, a program of MSSNY, provides confidential assistance, clinical guidance, monitoring, and advocacy for physicians, residents, medical students, and physician assistants experiencing substance use disorders, mental health conditions, or cognitive impairment. CPH promotes professional well‑being and public safety through early intervention, structured monitoring, outreach, and education.
Position Summary:
The Assistant Director plays a central clinical and operational role in supporting participants engaged with CPH. Under the general guidance of the Vice President/CPH Director and clinical direction of the Medical Director, the Assistant Director conducts clinical assessments, coordinates referrals, oversees participant monitoring, manages crisis situations, and develops advocacy strategies to support safe return‑to‑practice.
This position requires strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage complex cases while maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality. Although this is primarily an office‑based position, employees are required to be onsite in Albany at least once per month.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct confidential clinical intakes, gather collateral information, and assess impairment.
- Refer participants to appropriate clinical settings for evaluation and treatment.
- Review external evaluations and identify critical case management issues.
- Develop individualized monitoring plans in alignment with program policies and clinical necessity.
- Assess recovery progress, provide clinical feedback, and determine advocacy positions.
- Maintain communication with treatment providers, hospitals, residency programs, and other stakeholders.
- Monitor compliance with behavioral, treatment, urine, and worksite reporting requirements.
- Provide crisis de‑escalation, interventions, and case stabilization.
- Coordinate with attorneys, regulatory bodies, and licensing agencies as appropriate.
- Deliver educational presentations and represent CPH to professional organizations.
- Maintain confidential databases and manage a diverse, high‑volume caseload.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychiatric Nursing, or a related field.
- Minimum of five years’ clinical experience in mental health and addiction treatment.
- Strong understanding of substance use disorders, psychiatric illness, and DSM criteria.
- Familiarity with physician licensing and medical misconduct frameworks preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with medical professionals and within complex organizational structures.
- Skilled in crisis intervention, clinical assessment, and case advocacy.
Required Competencies:
- Clinical knowledge of substance use and psychiatric disorders.
- Ability to interpret complex clinical and regulatory information.
- Strong presentation and public‑speaking skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic case‑tracking systems.
- Sound professional judgment and confidentiality standards.
Work Expectations:
- Hybrid role with required onsite presence in Albany at least once per month.
- Occasional travel for presentations or outreach.
- Ability to manage sensitive cases promptly and professionally.
Salary Range:
$60,000 - $60,800 annually.
