The County Attorney’s Office seeks an attorney with extensive legal knowledge and skills in litigation and government transactional work. The ideal candidate is proficient in general civil litigation, transactional practice, legal research and writing, and public speaking, and enjoys handling a wide variety of challenging legal matters. This position is in the General Law Section of the Office of the County Attorney.

The successful applicant will counsel and represent the County in multiple subject areas, including erroneous tax assessments, bankruptcy, election law, environmental law, transportation, intellectual property, consumer protection, government regulation, and legislative changes at the state and local levels.

Strong litigation skills and substantial trial experience are required, including a demonstrated ability to manage a case from inception to completion. This includes handling discovery, taking and defending depositions, and engaging in motions practice. The successful candidate will personally handle litigation in state and federal courts and appear before state administrative agencies.

This position also offers the opportunity to analyze proposed policies and legislation and assess their potential impact on the County and its programs. It provides an excellent opportunity to work in a collegial environment on a wide range of issues involving the interplay of federal, state, and local law. Fairfax County’s Office of the County Attorney serves as in-house counsel to the Board of Supervisors, the County Executive, department heads, division directors, and other County employees.

Teare, who was appointed to the position in 2016, and is the County’s first female County Attorney. The Office has a long list of distinguished attorneys, both past and present, including multiple alumni appointed by the General Assembly to serve as judges in local courts. The attorneys are active in the various bar associations and many of our attorneys have served in official capacities in the Virginia State Bar, the Fairfax Bar, the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia, and the Virginia Law Foundation. The LGA Cherin Award is named after retired Deputy County Attorney Bob Cherin for his distinguished public service. The Virginia Law Foundation’s Bobzien-Gaither Education Center is, in part, named after former County Attorney David P. Bobzien, who served as the president of the Virginia State Bar and the Virginia Law Foundation.
