Job Details
Position Summary:
We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Assistant Controller to support and enhance our accounting operations during a period of rapid expansion. This role will be instrumental in strengthening our financial infrastructure, ensuring audit readiness, improving month-end close processes, and building scalable systems. The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in inventory and cost of goods sold (COGS), along with experience managing small teams in dynamic environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Month-End Close & Financial Reporting
Own and manage the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements
Continuously improve close timelines and procedures
Audit Readiness & Compliance
Lead audit preparation efforts, including documentation, support schedules, and internal controls
Partner with external auditors to ensure a smooth and efficient audit process
Establish and maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies
Inventory & COGS Management
Oversee inventory accounting across eCommerce and retail channels
Analyze and monitor COGS, margins, and inventory variances
Partner with operations and supply chain teams to ensure accurate inventory tracking and costing
Team Leadership
Manage and mentor a small accounting team (2–3 team members)
Foster a collaborative, high-performance team environment
Delegate effectively while maintaining accountability for outputs
Process Improvement & Scalability
Identify and implement process improvements to support company growth
Establish scalable accounting systems, workflows, and controls
Support system implementations or upgrades as needed
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with FP&A, operations, and leadership to provide financial insights
Support strategic initiatives and special projects as the company grows
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred)
5–8+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in eCommerce, retail, or high-growth environments
Strong knowledge of inventory accounting and COGS analysis
Experience managing or mentoring a small team
Proven track record of improving processes and driving efficiencies
Experience with ERP systems and inventory management tools
Strong understanding of GAAP and internal controls
Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving startup environment
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in both eCommerce and brick-and-mortar retail accounting
Experience preparing for or supporting audits
Familiarity with scaling accounting operations in a startup environment
