The Chief Appraiser leads all appraisal operations across the organization, ensuring regulatory compliance, high-quality valuation work, and efficient, scalable processes. This role serves as the company's primary subject matter expert on complex appraisal matters, providing guidance to internal teams, resolving escalated issues, and supporting clients and lending partners. The Chief Appraiser is responsible for developing, maintaining, and enforcing appraisal policies, procedures, and systems that promote accuracy, consistency, and legal compliance-particularly as the organization transitions to Uniform Appraisal Dataset (UAD) 3.6.

This position offers flexible hours (approximately 20 hours per week), allowing the individual to continue operating independently as a field appraiser under their own company. There is also potential for growth into a full-time role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight of all appraisal operations, ensuring compliance with USPAP, state regulations, lender guidelines, and Appraisal Independence Requirements (including 3.6).
  • Serve as the organization's senior expert on complex and high-risk appraisal assignments, reviews, and valuation challenges.
  • Act as the escalation point for appraisal disputes, compliance concerns, and technical valuation questions, delivering timely and well-reasoned resolutions.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain appraisal policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure consistency, quality, and regulatory adherence.
  • Oversee appraiser licensing compliance, credential tracking, and ongoing education requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with clients, lenders, internal operations teams, and third-party appraisers to maintain smooth workflows and high service standards.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and guidance to internal staff and appraisers on compliance updates, complex valuation issues, and process improvements.
  • Support audits, examinations, and internal reviews related to appraisal compliance and quality control.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying operational inefficiencies, compliance risks, and opportunities to enhance appraisal quality and turnaround times.
  • Stay current on regulatory changes, market trends, and industry best practices, proactively advising leadership on impacts and recommendations.

Qualifications

  • Active Certified Residential or Certified General Appraiser license in good standing (multi-state licensing preferred).
  • Extensive experience in appraisal operations, compliance, and complex valuation assignments.
  • Strong working knowledge of USPAP, Appraisal Independence Requirements (including 3.6), and lender/investor guidelines.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in asset appraisal, with at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Exceptional analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working directly with lenders, appraisal management operations, and external appraisers.
  • High level of integrity, sound judgment, and attention to detail.

Preferred Experience

  • Prior experience as a Chief Appraiser, Review Appraiser, or senior appraisal/compliance leader.
  • Background supporting regulatory audits or examinations.
  • Experience building or refining appraisal policies, QC processes, and compliance systems.
  • Familiarity with advanced appraisal software and data analytics tools.

Applicants must complete all interviews without the use of AI or automated tools. All responses should reflect your own knowledge and experience.
