Controller / Accounting Manager
A well-established, mission-driven nonprofit organization in the affordable housing space is seeking a Controller / Accounting Manager to lead day-to-day accounting operations during a period of continued growth. This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for someone who enjoys being close to the work while also managing and developing a small accounting team.
The organization has a long track record of stability, a strong community mission, and a growing portfolio of properties across Chicago’s suburbs. The outgoing Controller is departing imminently, and senior leadership (with an accounting background) is providing coverage during the transition.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee full-cycle accounting for a multi-entity nonprofit organization
- Manage consolidations across multiple legal entities
- Lead fund and grant accounting, including compliance and reporting
- Supervise and mentor a small team of accounting staff
- Maintain accurate financial records and internal controls
- Prepare financial statements and support leadership with financial insights
- Remain highly involved in day-to-day accounting activities (hands-on role)
Required Experience & Skills
- Sage 50 experience is required
- Proven background working with multiple entities and consolidations
- Strong experience with fund and/or grant accounting
- Prior people management experience
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable “being in the weeds”
- Demonstrated career stability (no excessive job hopping without clear rationale)
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $100,000 – $115,000
