Accounting Specialist

Our client, the Village of Lake Villa, is a growing and forward-thinking municipal organization serving a vibrant lakefront community of 8,471 residents in northeastern Illinois. With a strong commitment to public service, financial sustainability, and strategic growth, the Village is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Accounting Specialist.

This position plays a vital role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the Village’s financial operations, supporting key initiatives such as capital planning, infrastructure reinvestment, and downtown redevelopment. Responsibilities for the Accounting Specialist

-Process accounts payable including invoice entry, coding, approvals, and payment preparation
-Maintain vendor records and prepare annual 1099 filings
-Prepare and post journal entries; assist with general ledger maintenance
-Perform monthly bank reconciliations and resolve discrepancies
-Maintain fixed asset and insurance property records
-Prepare bi-weekly Treasurer’s Reports and recurring financial reports
-Provide payroll support including compliance reporting and year-end W-2 processing
-Perform monthly benefits reconciliation (insurance, retirement, payroll deductions)
-Assist with onboarding and personnel file maintenance
-Prepare documentation and support annual audits
-Provide accounting and administrative support to the Finance Director and other departments

Experience for the Accounting Specialist

-Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
-1–3 years of accounting, payroll, or financial administration experience preferred
-Fund accounting experience preferred
-Strong knowledge of general accounting principles
-Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/financial systems
-Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
-Ability to work independently and manage recurring deadlines
-Strong written and verbal communication skills
-Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial and personnel information
-Municipal or public-sector experience preferred
