The Accountant supports the accounting operations of a mission‑driven affordable housing and community development organization. This role works closely with the Assistant Controller and senior finance team to maintain accurate financial records for housing development projects, affiliate entities, and management companies.
The Accountant assists with daily accounting activities, month‑end close, financial reporting, and audit preparation. This is a hands‑on role well suited for an early‑career accounting professional seeking exposure to nonprofit, real estate, and construction accounting in a collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
General Accounting Support
- Assist with day‑to‑day accounting activities for housing affiliate and management entities
- Prepare and post journal entries with appropriate supporting documentation
- Support month‑end close activities, including reconciliations and account reviews
- Assist with maintaining accurate general ledger records and account analyses
- Help ensure income and expenses are properly recorded and classified
Financial Reporting and Budget Support
- Assist in preparing monthly and quarterly financial reports for internal and external use
- Support budget preparation and budget variance reporting under the direction of senior finance staff
- Help analyze income statements, balance sheets, and budget variances, providing explanations as requested
Audit and Compliance Support
- Assist with preparation of audit schedules, work papers, and supporting documentation
- Help maintain organized, audit‑ready financial records
- Support tax and regulatory reporting for housing and management entities as needed
Collaboration and Administrative Support
- Work closely with housing development and operations teams to coordinate financial information
- Assist with financial reporting required by investors, lenders, or regulatory agencies
- Participate in special projects and process improvement initiatives as assigned
- Perform other accounting and administrative duties as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field
- One to three years of accounting or bookkeeping experience preferred (internship experience considered)
- Proficiency in Excel; experience with accounting systems such as Yardi is a plus
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Willingness to learn, take direction, and work collaboratively as part of a team
